Mariska Hargitay And Peter Hermann's Love Story, From 'Law & Order' Set To Adopting Two Children

Mariska Hargitay has become well-known over the years for her work on films and television. Apart from playing various roles, the actress has given her voice to 'Lt. Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann’s love story started on the set of a show

Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann’s first meeting happened on the set of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2002. Notably, the latter made a guest appearance on the third season of the series. After Peter completed filming for his portion on the show, he approached Mariska to attend a church service. In 2019, Mariska recalled that this was the moment she realized that Peter was the right person for her to get married. Mariska compared the experience to being hit with a lightning bolt and added:

“I just started sobbing. Peter thought I was crying because I was so moved by the service. No, it was because I was just overwhelmed, realizing he was the one.”

Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann’s wedding ceremony was organized in 2004 in Santa Barbara. The former said in an interview with PEOPLE in 2019 that she and Peter knew that they wanted to tie the knot. Mariska stated that she never expected the moment to be so good and that she would be reminded that she will marry the right person. In the same conversation, Peter Hermann recalled the time he got married to Mariska Hargitay and said:

“I actually saw Mariska with all of the people that she loved around her. It was like seeing this person who was now in the soil, that she was just dying to be planted in it. Right? Which was this abundance of people and this abundance of love and I thought, ‘I want to be part of that soil.’ And that was the moment when I had not just parted the soil, but to be a lot of the soil.”

Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann’s first child, August Miklos Friedrich, was born in June 2006. In an interview with Self magazine in 2007, Mariska recalled the time when she was expecting her child, saying that no one wanted to be more pregnant than her and that she was excited when she first learned the news. Hargitay stated that she opted for eating so that she could stay comfortable, considering that she was filming for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit during the same period.

Mariska said that following a C-section, she had a pouch on her belly for a long time. She described the pouch as a “badge of honor,” adding that she was proud of the same. Hargitay also changed her diet to ensure that she could lose some weight. Mariska continued addressing her experience with pregnancy by saying:

“After getting pregnant I felt so different about my body. I felt like it was a sanctuary, like August’s house. It was like, somebody lives there now - I’ve got to keep it nice and strong and healthy for him. And so now I’m thinking that someone else is going to live there someday soon, so I’ve got to get it ready. It’s very exciting.”

Although Mariska Hargitay did not get pregnant again, she and Peter Hermann adopted a girl named Amaya Josephine in April 2011. Mariska appeared for an interview with PEOPLE in the same year, stating that she and Peter considered many options, including mixed-race adoptions. Mariska even expressed happiness about the fact that when Amaya was added to their family, they were excited since they became a multi-racial family.

In October 2011, Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann adopted a son named Andrew Nicolas. The former said in an interview that she never expected it to happen so soon, adding that she and Peter knew that everything about Andrew felt right. Mariska also revealed that Amaya and Andrew developed a bond immediately as they were lying together in the crib, including that Amaya was putting her arm around Andrew, displaying a protective behavior.
