Great news for Marvel and What If…? fans: the superhero franchise is about to drop its most gruesome project yet, and it’s animated. That’s right, Marvel Zombies is officially crawling onto Disney+ this fall, and fans are already losing it over the first trailer that was recently dropped. If the gory sneak peek is any indication, viewers can expect full-on carnage with the undead Avengers, potentially making this the bloodiest instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet.
Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming four-episode animated miniseries, from the release date to the plot, cast, and the wild moments in the trailer everyone’s talking about. Pro tip: watch What If…? (2021) first for full context.
The plot of Marvel Zombies picks up where the episode titled ‘What If…Zombies?!’ in What If…? left off. For those not familiar with the 2021 animated series, it features an alternate universe where a virus from the Quantum Realm has infected Earth’s legendary heroes and turned them into bloodthirsty zombies. Among the undead corpses were ‘Iron Man’, ‘Wanda’, ‘Hawkeye’, ‘Falcon’, and even ‘Doctor Strange’.
With Marvel Zombies, the makers are building on that lore. In the new series, survivors like ‘Yelena Belova’, ‘Shang-Chi’, ‘Kate Bishop’, and ‘Kamala Khan’ must battle their own fallen teammates who have come back from the dead and are just as powerful. The only mission of the survivors is to find a way to stop the plague before it consumes the entire world.
If you have read the Marvel Zombies comic series, you already know just how much carnage one can expect from its animated version. Added to the already gory plot, the MCU version is taking things up a notch by mixing Robert Kirkman’s original comic inspiration with the What If…? formula. And the result is a full-blown nightmare fuel.

Marvel Zombies promises to be just the perfect show for Marvel fans, with a load of favourites reprising their iconic roles, lending voices to their animated avatars. Actress Florence Pugh is returning as ‘Yelena Belova’, and Elizabeth Olsen returns as ‘Wanda Maximoff’, aka ‘Scarlet Witch’, while Paul Rudd reprises ‘Scott Lang’ or ‘Ant-Man’.
Simu Liu is back to lend his voice to ‘Shang-Chi’, whereas David Harbour returns as ‘Alexei Shostakov’, aka ‘Red Guardian’. Other returning cast members include Tessa Thompson (‘Valkyrie’), Awkwafina (‘Katy’), Hailee Steinfeld (‘Kate Bishop’), Wyatt Russell (‘John Walker’ or ‘U.S. Agent’), Randall Park (‘Jimmy Woo’), Iman Vellani (‘Kamala Khan’, aka ‘Ms. Marvel’, and Dominique Thorne (‘Riri Williams’ or ‘Ironheart’).
Adding to the excitement, after years of teasing glimpses, fans can finally see ‘Blade’, the iconic vampire slayer, in all his glory, as he slices his way into the MCU. Voiced by Todd Williams, this variant of ‘Blade’ (nicknamed ‘Blade Knight’) shows off brutal swordsmanship against an undead ‘Ghost’.
Coming to some iconic Avengers, ‘Black Panther’, ‘Captain America’, and ‘Captain Marvel’ were notably absent from the credits. Turns out we’ll have to wait and see if Marvel is deliberately saving some surprise reveals in the series itself.
The first trailer of Marvel Zombies is out. The 1-minute-45-second-long video wastes no time in setting the intense tone. Fair warning: even though it’s animated, if you’re squeamish, you might want to skip it. This is the first-ever mature-rated animated series of the studio, so you can only imagine how dark it’s going to get.
The trailer opens with an arrow blasting through a zombie’s (likely ‘Kate Bishop’) skull, followed by a montage of intense brawls. The iconic ‘Spider-Man’ can be seen decapitating the undead with his web, while a zombified ‘Wanda’ wreaks havoc with her chaos magic. The major highlight is the introduction of ‘Blade’, who jumps in, slicing through the undead Avengers.
After Fantastic Four (released on July 25, 2025) and Eyes of Wakanda (released on August 1, 2025), Marvel Zombies is set to arrive as the third Phase Six release, dropping on September 24, 2025. Being a miniseries, all four episodes will be released together. Like all other MCU shows, Marvel Zombies will stream exclusively on Disney+ (JioHotstar in India).
So, if you don’t want to miss this zombie apocalypse, mark your calendar for September 24, 2025!
