Born on December 28, 2001, Maitreyi was raised in Mississauga, Ontario and completed her high school from there. She comes from a Tamil-speaking Hindu family whose family sought refuge in Canada due to the civil war in Sri Lanka. Her father, Ram Selvarajah, is an IT Specialist, and her mother, Kiruthiha Kulendiren, is a Marketing Officer.

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan bagged the role of ‘Devi Vishwakumar’ with over 15000 applicants

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan learned about the open auditions for the series through one of her friends. Her friend told Maitreyi that Mindy Kaling was holding an open call for a South Asian teen actress to play the lead in a new Netflix series. 

Maitreyi was rehearsing for her school play when she went to audition for the role of ‘Devi Vishwakumar’. She tried her luck, and after two auditions in LA, Maitreyi bagged the lead role in the show, beating over 15,000 applicants. Maitreyi shares a close bond with Mindy now and calls her her ‘fairy godmother’. 

In an interaction with Now Toronto, Maitreyi talked about her role in the series and shared how she wants to make people of her community proud. In her words:

“I want other Tamils all over the world to feel pride that Tamil people are making it.”

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan expanded her acting profile after starring in Never Have I Ever. In 2022, she lent her voice to the character of ‘Priya Mangal’ in Pixar’s film Turning Red and the animated comedy My Little Pony. Her upcoming projects include a romantic comedy film, The Netherfield Girls, which is an adaptation of Jane Austin’s novel, Pride and Prejudice. Apart from being a stunning actress, Maitryi is a skilled piano player and a member of a jazz band.
