Colonel Sofiya Qureshi is one of the two female officers who unveiled the success of India’s precision strike, ‘Operation Sindoor’. Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh came forward and gave the high-level military briefing to the press on India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’, a counter-attack to the Pahalgam incident. But do you know, that Colonel Sofiya Qureshi’s great-grandfather was part of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, while her dad fought the 1971 Indo-Pak war? Yes, you read it right, the 1999 commissioned officer of the Indian Army, Sofiya hails from a family deeply rooted in military tradition and service for the nation.
Sofiya, a resident of Vadodara, Gujarat, comes from a family who hold a long-time legacy to serve the nation. According to The Times Of India report, Sofiya’s grandfather served in the Religious Teacher (RT) cadre in the Indian Army, while her dad, Taj Mohammad Qureshi, fought in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Sofiya’s father was also part of the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers. Sofiya’s great-grandfather was part of the historic 1857 revolt and also served in the British Indian Army. As per The New Indian Express report, Sofiya’s brother revealed that his other sister, Saina Qureshi, was also passionate about joining the Indian Army, but couldn’t qualify for the test because of her height.
Sofiya Qureshi tied the knot with Tajuddin Bagewadi, a resident of Konnur village, Karnataka, in 2015. The couple had a love cum arranged marriage. The duo is now serving officers in the Indian Army. According to The New Indian Express report, Sofiya is posted in Jammu, while Tajuddin serves in Jhansi. The couple is now a proud parent of an 18-year-old boy, who is prepping hard to join the Indian Armed Force (IAF).
Born in 1974 in Gujarat’s Vadodara, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi completed her schooling in Kendriya Vidyalaya, EME. The woman officer graduated with a Master’s degree in Biochemistry from Maharaja Sayajirao University in 1997. In 2006, Sofiya was selected as a military observer in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In Congo, Sofiya risked her life and played an important role in reuniting a five-year-old girl with her parents, earning admiration from Congolese women.

Sofiya also served six years in the UN Peacekeeping Operations (PKO). In March 2016, Sofiya became the first and only woman officer to lead an Indian Army contingent at the multi-national military exercise Force 18. For the multinational military exercise, she was also awarded the Chief of Army Staff Plaque of Honour. Sofiya made her place in her unit, by securing the first position of Provost Marshal. Back in 2020, Sofiya was recognised by the Supreme Court in a landmark judgment on gender parity along with 10 other women officers, highlighting their contributions to the Indian Army and opening the door for greater female representation in the Indian Army's top positions.
