In a tragic event, an Air India flight crashed near Ahmedabad airport on June 12, 2025, with 242 passengers onboard. The fight was taking off for London, and the accident occurred during the take-off. Former Gujarat Chief Minister, Vijay Rupani, who was reported to be on board, died in the tragic crash.
As per various reports, the plane caught fire after crashing. As reports of Vijay Rupani’s death surfaced in the media, a sense of chaos erupted. A leading politician and former CM of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani was known as the ‘man of few words’. He was one of the most loved politicians in the Indian political arena. Let us read on to know more about him.
Vijay Rupani started his political career as a student leader during his college days. He worked as an activist of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. Rupani actively participated in the Navnirman movement and anti-corruption movements. He joined RSS and was a Pracharak of RSS from 1978 to 1981.
Vijay Rupani had been associated with the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) since its establishment. He was merely 24 when he joined the party and has since worked in the party diligently. He was appointed as the General Secretary of Rajkot City BJP and also served as BJP's Gujarat unit general secretary and spokesperson for four terms.
Vijay Rupani went to jail for 11 months in Bhavnagar Jail while protesting against Indra Gandhi’s Emergency. Vijay Rupani, who held an LLB degree, worked as a stockbroker in a trading firm, Rasiklal and Sons, founded by his father before his stint as a politician.

Vijay Rupani entered state-level politics in 1987 when he was elected as a Corporator of Rajkot Municipal Corporation. He also served as the Chairman of the Drainage System Committee. From 1996 to 1997, Vijay Rupani was established as the Mayor of Rajkot. He held the Ministry of Transport, Water Supply, labour and Employment.
In 2016, Vijay Rupani succeeded Anandiben Patel and was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He continued to be the Chief Minister of Gujarat for two terms from 2016 to 2021. In 2021, Vijay Rupani resigned from the post and was succeeded by Bhupendra Patel.
Vijay Rupani got married to Anjali, a member of BJP women’s wing. The duo became proud parents of two sons and a daughter. However, tragedy struck Vijay when he lost his youngest son, Pujit, in an accident. After Pujit's death, he established the Pujit Rupani Memorial Trust for charity.
Many reports stated that Vijay Rupani’s softspoken image worked against him in politics. However, his daughter, Radhika Rupani, once defended her father and stated that outspokenness is a quality that people often look for in leaders to have easy access to them. She also stated that whenever it was needed, her father dealt sternly with people who broke the law.
Vijay Rupani was once listed among the top 100 most influential people in India.
