Kerry Washington is a renowned American actress. She made her on-screen debut with the 1994 ABC telefilm, Magical Make-Over. Since then, Kerry appeared on a number of projects throughout the late ‘90s and the early 2000s. This includes roles in She Hate Me, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Bad Company, Boston Legal, and Save the Last Dance, among others.

It was in 2012 that Kerry made her breakthrough and rose to widespread fame, starring in Quentin Tarantino's film, Django Unchained and the ABC drama series, Scandal. Since then, Kerry has established herself as one of the top actresses in the industry. Most recently, she appeared in the psychological drama series, Imperfect Women, which had its global premiere on Apple TV on March 18, 2026. Now, with her being in the spotlight for her role as ‘Eleanor’ on the show, fans have been curious to learn about her personal life, especially her husband, Nnamdi Asomugha.

Kerry Washington’s husband, Nnamdi Asomugha, is a former professional football player. Before he became a producer and actor, Nnamdi played in the NFL for 11 years. He was picked in the first round by the Oakland Raiders in the 2013 NFL draft. If a report by ESPN is to be believed, Nnamdi helped lead the team to three Pro Bowls during his time there. In 2011, he signed a 5-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, although he left the team after only two years.

Following this, in 2013, Nnamdi had a rather short run with the San Francisco 49ers, appearing in only three games for the team before being released. That same year, Nnamdi announced he was retiring from the NFL, marking the end of his decades-long career. To mention, Nnamdi signed a one-day contract with the team where he started his professional career, with Oakland, just so he could retire as a Raider. During an interview with UPROXX, he opened up about his difficult decision to retire at 32, saying:

“Yeah, I felt that it was a good time, but it didn't make it any easier. It's a game that ‘til this day I miss, and I miss playing. It's not that I want to go play again, but I miss so many aspects of it; being around the team, being around the coaching, the calm before the storm.”

During an interview with Wealthsimple Magazine, Nnamdi said that, as a player, one is not in control of one's destiny. This is why, from the second year in the league, he prepared himself by thinking that this could all end at any time. Eventually, when Nnamdi retired, it was director, Peter Berg and a Nike commercial which changed the trajectory of his post-NFL career. While he was still playing, Peter offered him a small cameo role in the hit series, Friday Night Lights, telling Nnamdi to “nurture” his acting chops.

Despite both Nnamdi and Kerry being in the entertainment industry, they don't often get to work together on creative projects. During a 2017 interview, Nnamdi talked about how he and Kerry should co-produce a project at some point. He said, “We would produce. We'd probably produce before acting, I would think.” Now, although it is to be seen when and where Kerry and Nnamdi team up, the former NFL player did mention that he and Kerry would always support each other's work. He said:

“And I say all the time, when you're transitioning from one career to another, or even just one job to another, most of the time you will go as far as your support is. You know what I mean? And especially your support at home.”
