It seems as if the film industry is going through a tough time. In the past few months, several artists have left for the heavenly abode. After the tragic death of legendary actor, Dharmendra, a popular Kannada actor has left his fans shocked. For the unversed, actor, M. S. Umesh passed away on November 30, 2025, after a long battle with cancer. 

For those who don't know, M. S. Umesh was a popular Kannada actor, who was well-known for his warm screen presence and comic timing. He had been working for almost six decades and had appeared in hundreds of films. His death has left a void in the Kannada film industry. While the industry is mourning his death, read on to know more about M.S. Umesh's early life and career achievements.

Mysore Srikantayya Umesh a.k.a M.S. Umesh was born on April 24, 1945, in Mysuru to parents, A. L. Srikantayya and Nanjamma. Reportedly, he discovered his passion for acting and theatre at a very young age. As a child, he joined a theater group and started acting in plays. This developed his foundation for strong performance. Reportedly, he had also worked with Master K. Hirannaiah’s troupe.

After building a strong foundation from theatre, the veteran actor made his film debut in 1960 as a child actor in the film, Makkala Rajya. Slowly and gradually, his versatility and strong on-screen presence brought him a huge fanbase. With his unique facial expressions, natural dialogue delivery and unmatched comic timing, he went on to appear in over 350 Kannada films. Some of his films are Nagara Hole, Guru Shishyaru, Anupama, Kaamana Billu, Apoorva Sangama, Shruthi Seridaaga, Shravana Banthu, Malaya Marutha, Golmaal Radhakrishna, Neenu Nakkare Haalu Sakkare, Venkata in Sankata to name a few.

In M. S. Umesh's long career of around six decades, the veteran Kannada actor won multiple awards. Reportedly, he won the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Supporting Actor in the film, Katha Sangama. Later, he also received the Karnataka Nataka (Nataka) Akademi Award in 2013 for his lifetime contribution to theatre. Over the years, he worked with multiple veteran actors. His tragic death marks the end of a glorious era.

M.S. Umesh was battling cancer

In early October 2025, M. S. Umesh had reportedly injured himself badly, when he fell at his home in JP Nagar. He had reportedly hurt his leg and shoulder. When he was taken to the hospital for an operation to fix his injuries, his reports revealed that the veteran actor had stage-four liver cancer, and the cancer had already spread to other organs. Because of the same, his planned operation had to be cancelled.

Soon after the discovery of stage-four liver cancer, the doctors had started his treatment. However, M.S. Umesh couldn't survive for long. If reports are to be believed, he breathed his last on November 30, 2025, at Kidwai Hospital, Bengaluru in front of the doctors and his family members. It is worth mentioning that his family has not yet issued any statement on the actor's death.

While there is no information available on M.S. Umesh’s wife and children, a few months ago, the actor had given an interview to TV9, during which he had mentioned about his wife and daughter. In the interview, he spoke about his journey as an actor and how he had maintained his self-respect and dignity, despite going through financial struggles. He had shared that he always believed in earning through hard work and not charity. He was quoted as saying:

"I don't stretch out my hand without working. I get a pension of Rs 2,000 as I have worked in theatre for many years. That's enough for me. If I get a chance to do a film, that's enough. A man must be satisfied. God has given us satisfaction. There are only three of us. My daughter, my wife and I. Everyone is there to support us. We have not lived a life of luxury and luxury. I don't even have a car. Enough for me. Wherever you go in Karnataka, people love you and you don't want anything bigger than that."
