Meet Tatiana Schlossberg's Mother Caroline Kennedy, Helped Her Deal With Cancer, Raised Her Children

Tatiana Schlossberg recently opened up about her health struggles and detailed her terminal illness. She made the revelations in an essay published by The New Yorker on November 22, 2025. She shared deeply personal accounts of how her family supported her through her terminal acute myeloid leukemia (AML) treatment and expressed sorrow for being unable to be there for her children much due to her ailment. Her doctors also informed her that she has just about a year to live. Ahead of her passing, she wanted to share her story with the world, which she did through the essay.

Who is Tatiana Schlossberg's mother, Caroline Kennedy?

Caroline Kennedy, the mother of Tatiana Schlossberg, is an author, attorney, and diplomat who has served as the US Ambassador to Japan and Australia. She is the only surviving child of the late US President, John F. Kennedy, and former First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Tatiana Celia Kennedy Schlossberg is Caroline's middle child, with her eldest being Rose Kennedy Schlossberg and her youngest, John 'Jack' Bouvier Kennedy Schlossberg. Caroline raised her son and two daughters with utmost love and care, even amid her busy political career and highly publicised life.

Caroline was deeply saddened to learn about Tatiana's acute myeloid leukemia and wanted to help her daughter out in any way possible. In her essay for The New Yorker, titled A Battle with My Blood, Tatiana Schlossberg revealed that her mother went so far as to make a political move against a family member to protest against an alleged injustice against Tatiana. The context is that Tatiana's cousin, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (better known as RFK Jr.), reportedly cut almost half a billion dollars from the fund initially allocated to mRNA vaccine research, leveraging his political influence.

Tatiana and her family felt that her cancer diagnosis was delayed due to the vaccine defunding. As a retaliatory move, Caroline Kennedy wrote to the Senate to prevent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. from being elected as the US Health Secretary. However, Tatiana's mother's efforts went in vain, and Tatiana had to watch her cousin take the office while lying in her hospital bed. Tatiana also felt it didn't make sense for RFK Jr. to be elected to a position without having a background in medicine or public health. She documented the incident in her essay, stating:

"My mother wrote a letter to the Senate, to try and stop his confirmation; my brother [Jack Schlossberg] had been speaking out against his lies for months. I watched from my hospital bed as Bobby, in the face of logic and common sense, was confirmed for the position, despite never having worked in medicine, public health, or the government."

Tatiana Schlossberg's father, Edwin Schlossberg, also supported her throughout her terminal cancer journey

Tatiana Schlossberg's father, Edwin Schlossberg, is an American designer, artist, and author. He is a pioneer in interactive museum installations and the founder and principal designer of ESI Design, a multidisciplinary firm specialising in interactive environments. He has also authored eleven books, and his artwork has been featured in museums and solo exhibitions worldwide. He married Tatiana's mother, Caroline Kennedy, in 1986.

Just like Tatiana's mother, her father has also supported her during her terminal cancer journey by helping to raise her two children and by sitting with her in the hospital. Tatiana has noted that her family has offered unwavering support while trying to conceal their own pain and sadness to protect her. In her essay, Tatiana expressed sadness about adding to her family's worries because of her illness. However, she also shared that she felt blessed to have their unwavering support during her hard time. Tatiana wrote:

“My parents and my brother and sister, too, have been raising my children and sitting in my various hospital rooms almost every day for the last year and a half. They have held my hand unflinchingly while I have suffered, trying not to show their pain and sadness in order to protect me from it. This has been a great gift, even though I feel their pain every day.”

We wish Tatiana's family strength to deal with this challenging time, as she battles this tough disease.
