American politician of Indian descent, Zohram Kwame Mamdani, is in the race to be the next NYC mayor. The 33-year-old Zohran Mamdani has defeated Andrew Cuomo to win the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City. The son of postcolonial theorist Mahmood Mamdani and acclaimed filmmaker, Mira Nair, Zohran was trained in Astoria’s political trenches.

It was in 2015 when Zohran began his political career, and in 2017, he joined the Democratic Socialists of America. He defeated the former governor Andrew Cuomo and won New York City's Democratic mayoral primary. He is the first Muslim, the first Asian, and the first mayor to be associated with the Democratic Socialists of America.

Zohran Mamdani’s wife, Rama Dawuji, is a Syrian artist based in Brooklyn. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts. She is also an animator and ceramicist. Rama’s art explores themes of identity and belonging. They have often appeared in The New Yorker, The Washington Post, and VICE.

Zohran Mamdani met Rama Dawuji on Hinge

The new NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani met his wife, Rama Duwaji, on the dating app Hinge. In a conversation with YouTuber and content creator Kaneez Surka, Zohran revealed that it was on the dating app Hinge that he met Rama, and it is their common love for music and art which brought them closer.

Zohran Mamdani and Rama had fallen madly in love with each other and got engaged in Dubai, where Rama’s family lives, in December 2024. In early 2025, Zohran and his wife, Rama, got married in an intimate ceremony at the City Clerk’s office. Zohran shared details about his wedding with Rama on social media and wrote:

“Three months ago, I married the love of my life, Rama, at the City Clerk’s office. Now, right-wing trolls are trying to make this race—which should be about you—about her. Rama isn’t just my wife, she’s an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms.”

Mamdani, who likes to keep his personal life away from the media glare, was constantly quibbled about his personal life and was accused of hiding his wife. These accusations led Zohran to post details about his wedding with Rama and how his wife was not connected with his political life. He also revealed that his wife, Rama, has her own identity and doesn’t need to be known by his name.

The Mamdani campaign also issued a statement to the NY Post stating details about Zohran and Rama’s engagement and stated:

“Before their civil ceremony in New York City, Zohran and his wife celebrated their engagement in Dubai last year—where her family lives—with a small, joyful ceremony surrounded by their loved ones.”
