The iconic fashion event, Met Gala, has evolved a lot since its beginning back in 1948. The gala became a media-covered affair in 1972, when former Vogue editor, Diana Vreeland took charge as a special consultant at the Costume Institute. Later, in 1995, Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, took over the charge as a leader and has continued to hold leadership since then. Slowly, under Anna’s leadership, the Met Gala became a global phenomenon where celebrities from all over the world were invited to hit the stage. But do you know the artisans behind the making of the red carpet? The carpet is ordered from Kerala, India. Yes, you heard it right. Read on to learn the origin of the Met Gala carpet, which made the global event so glamorous.
While the global icons walk the red carpet, little do people know about the Indian craftsmanship behind the piece on which the stars generally walk. The carpet for the iconic fashion event is manufactured in Alleppey, Kerala. The 63,000-square-foot carpet laid at the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is crafted by Extraweave, a Kerala-based company. This is the third running year where Extraweave, a parent company of Neytt Homes, is manufacturing the iconic fashion carpet.
Extraweave has previously manufactured the Met Gala carpet back in 2022 and 2023. The carpet is made using natural sisal fibre sourced from Madagascar. Around 480 Indian artisans were involved in the making, and they took 90 days to complete the massive order. Once the order is manufactured, the carpet is shipped to New York. In New York, the carpet gets hand-painted to maintain the theme of the gala event. Previously, it used to be a red carpet, but now it is painted. Maintaining the fashion event’s theme, the carpet gets painted. The interesting fact is that it takes 12-15 people to set the carpet on the staircase.
Each and every detail is pre-planned when it comes to a global fashion event like Met Gala. Even the carpet design has a deeper meaning, considering the theme of the Met Gala. But do you know why the red carpet is painted blue this year?
The deep blue carpet with floral designs was crafted by artist CY Gavin. The red carpet is painted in blue and has motifs of daffodils throughout. In an interview with Vogue, CY Gavin shared how he became fascinated with the spring seasonals grown outside his upstate New York studio. For the unversed, the blooming daffodils symbolise the arrival of the new season, a new beginning and a symbol of rebirth. Since the Costume Institute fundraiser takes place on the first Monday of May, the artist thought of collaborating the seasonal flowers with the fashion event.
