Meet Michael Burry, 'The Big Short' US Investor: Inside His AI Crash Warning And Strained Marriage

Michael Burry is a famous American investor who rose to fame when he predicted the 2008 financial crisis. After so many years of his iconic prediction, he broke into the headlines once again in November 2025. Burry made a surprising prediction about AI (artificial intelligence) that has sent shockwaves through Wall Street. The famous investor has questioned the ever-growing hype around AI and stated that the AI investment boom could be the next big bubble to burst.

Michael Burry has also criticised the optimism around AI-driven stocks, and he even reportedly wound down his fund, saying that the ongoing "AI Mania" reminded him of the early 2000s dot-com crash. The investor has deregistered his hedge fund, Scion Asset Management, which means Burry will no longer manage clients' money. Not only this, he has reportedly placed options against major tech companies like Palantir Technologies and Nvidia.

The American investor's tweet, "Sometimes the only winning move is not to play," clearly shows he's on the side of a few people who see a major misvaluation in the markets. As soon as Michael Burry's remarks went live, they broke headlines, and investors around the globe have started reevaluating their positions in tech giants. If he is proven right in the future, Burry will hit huge numbers and be remembered for centuries for his vision and prediction. However, it could also be his "off the grid" strategy for a bigger move.

During the 2008 financial crisis, Michael Burry was one of the first investors to realise that the entire US housing market was built on high-risk mortgages. While most investors on Wall Street believed the market was unshakable, Burry decided to bet against it. He studied the loan data himself and discovered a series of factors that could lead to its collapse. After he was convinced that the housing market's collapse was inevitable, he used credit default swaps (CDS) to bet against the market.

Eventually, after the crash, Michael Burry's fund, Scion Capital, earned more than 700 million USD in profits for investors. If the reports are to be believed, Burry made over USD 100 million, and Michael Lewis even wrote a book about his remarkable prediction and success titled The Big Short. The book was later adapted into a movie of the same name, and Christian Bale played Michael Burry. The movie went on to win an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, and Bale was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Burry.

US investor Michael Burry's personal life: How his research for the 2008 crash affected his marriage

Apart from being a successful investor, Michael Burry became a celebrity after the success of The Big Short. However, despite all the glam and glitz of the media, he kept his wife and kids private. Even their names and pictures aren't available in the public domain. However, Burry has spoken publicly about them on only a few occasions. Once, in an old interview with a publication, he opened up about the time he spent in office analysing loan data before the 2008 crash. Burry revealed that he used to spend most of his time at work building a report to convince investors who doubted him during that phase.

Unfortunately, Michael Burry couldn't spend time with his wife and children during that phase, and his time at home also shrank to the point that he became obsessed with his work. The way he used to isolate himself at work had strained his marriage and reportedly created emotional distance between them. As a result, after his prediction proved right and he made millions, Burry took a break to be with his wife and children. He also decided to be with his autistic son during his therapies. Despite all the success he has achieved, his family helped him become grounded.
