Milind Rege, who was the former Mumbai Captain and domestic cricket selector, passed away on February 19, 2025, after succumbing to a heart attack. He had turned 76 recently on February 16, 2025. According to a report by the Hindustan Times, he was admitted to the ICU department of Breach Candy Hospital. He passed away around 6 am on the morning of February 16, 2025, and has left behind his wife and two sons.
Reportedly, Milind, who was considered an all-rounder, got his first heart attack at the mere age of 26. However, after being fit as a fiddle, he returned to the cricket pitch and captained the Mumbai cricket team during the Ranji Trophy. Talking about Milind's accomplishments, he played 52 First-Class matches during 1966-67 and 1977-78 years. During this time, Milind had taken 126 wickets and broken his right arm while bowling. Milind had made 1,532 runs reportedly and had an average of 23.56. During his cricket career, Milind was dedicated to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and contributed as a selector, chief of selector. He had donned varied hats in the game of cricket.
Milind was one of the selectors from Mumbai when Sachin Tendulkar, during his youth, was added to the Ranji Trophy team back in 1988. Milind reportedly was also a video analyst for India's domestic cricket team. Sachin Tendulkar had also taken to X to remember Milind's contribution in the field of cricket. Tendulkar mentioned in his post that he was sad to hear about Milind's demise, who was a true Mumbai cricketer and made immense contributions to the city's cricket. Sachin's tweet also read:
"He and other CCI members saw potential in me and asked me to play for CCI, which, as I look back now, was a landmark moment in my career. He could pick out a talented player from a sea of hardworking hopefuls. He had a special sixth sense to pick talent at all levels, but especially at junior levels."
Tendulkar, in his heart-wrenching tweet, also mentioned that Milind has left behind a void, one that's tough to fill. He may not be around, but his imprint on people's lives will always live on. He made a difference to so many lives and definitely made a difference to Sachin's life, the retired Master Blaster revealed. Sachin even thanked Milind and offered heartfelt condolences to his friends and family.
The Indian cricket board also paid tribute to Milind and wrote a condolence message. The Board mentioned that the BCCI mourns the passing of Milind Rege, former Mumbai captain and selector. He was called as a pillar of Mumbai cricket and a part of the post read:
