Moana has been one of the most beloved animated movies among the masses. The first ever Moana was released back in 2016, while the sequel was released in 2024. Well, now Disney is bringing 'Moana' to life with the live-action remake. For the unversed, a live-action remake is Disney's way of revamping its existing movies and bringing them to life rather than animating them. With the success of Lilo & Stitch, Disney is now all set to make a live-action remake of the movie, Moana. The teaser has been dropped, and netizens have already started reviewing it.

In the teaser of the live-action remake of Moana, we could get a glimpse of Catherine Laga'aia playing the role of 'Moana' as she sails in the sea while singing the song, How Far I'll Go. People remained glued to the screens for all the right reasons, as it hit the right nostalgic chords. On the other hand, some netizens remained unimpressed as they felt that the movie's CGI was not that much 'good', while others felt that the movie is a mere AI-version of the previous animated versions, as the cliff jumping scenes felt poorly done, as felt by the netizens.

Netizens are also a bit disappointed with the fact that the sequel was released just a year ago; thus, they felt that the live-action remake was a little too soon to bring to the screens. The sequel even outgrossed the first Moana, by grossing 1.059 billion dollars worldwide. 

On Reddit, netizens have started discussing the teaser of the movie. One user penned, "Artificial … like someone fed the original Moana into AI and said, ‘make it live-action." Another user commented, "From 100% CGI to 90% CGI. Seems like a waste." A third user commented, "The live actions haven’t been good since Cinderella, I wish they’d give it up."

Who played the lead in the live-action remake of Moana?

For the unversed, Auli'i Cravalho was the one to voice 'Moana' in the animated movies for 2016 and 2024. Well, she's now the executive producer of the live-action remake, and she shared that she wouldn't return in the role of the lead, and rather she would want another actress to portray her skills in the movie. Well, Catherine Laga'aia bagged the role in the movie. She is currently 18 years old and it's her debut in the lead role, while previously, she played the role of 'Young Candy' in the Prime Video series The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart.

On the other hand, Dwayne Johnson, who will be reprising his role as 'Maui'. The movie will hit the theatres in July 2025, and netizens have been left excited to see what Disney has in store for the live-action remake of the movie, which has remained a classic for years among the masses. The movie is special to everyone, and Catherine was no exception. She revealed in a press conference that 'Moana' is one of her favourites, and it's extra special for her as she is connected to the Samoan and Pacific Island peoples. She shared:

"My grandfather comes from Fa‘aala, Palauli, in Savai‘i. And my grandmother is from Leulumoega Tuai on the main island of ‘Upolu in Samoa. I’m honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me."
