Indian weddings are filled with a lot of emotions and customs, and every culture follows different rituals. However, some Indian customs have often sparked debate among the netizens. One such custom is a mother performing an act of breastfeeding her grown-up son on the day of his wedding. Yes, you read that right. Many parts of India follow this custom to this day.
Recently, a video has been circulating on social media platforms where a mother performs an act of breastfeeding her son in a baarat on the day of his wedding. In the video, the mother, whose head was covered, was seen lifting her blouse and performing an act of feeding her son, who was dressed up in his wedding attire. This practice is done in front of the guests with cameras rolling.
As soon as the video was shared on social media, netizens reacted to the same and showed their disgust over the age-old custom. Many also pointed out the irony of the situation, where the woman has to cover her face in front of strangers while publicly performing these age-old customs. One of the comments can be read as, “How is anyone of them comfortable doing this.” Another user commented, “Who could've possibly thought this was a good idea?”

This ritual of breastfeeding an adult son on the day of his marriage is mainly followed in Rajasthan, western Nepal, and some districts of Haryana. This ritual takes place in front of the public, where the mother is supposed to feed her son one last time before he takes the wedding vows. This tradition mainly signifies the fact that despite his marriage, the son never forgets his mother for the woman he is going to get married to.
The custom also states that if the mother is not alive, the ritual is performed by the brother’s wife. Even to this day, many people follow this custom as an important part of their marriage. Despite the changing mindset, this particular custom is followed by many parts with a lot of pomp and fervour. Some consider it symbolic, while others perform the ritual in reality.
It is ironic that in a community where a woman needs to hide her face behind her veil in front of men, she breastfeeds her son in front of the entire community. It shows people’s blind faith in age-old customs. These age-old customs are still a major part of many regions in India and are still followed during the wedding.
