Bollywood actor, Imran Khan, who has been away from the limelight had married his long-time love, Avantika Malik, back in 2011. However, after eight years of relationship bliss, the couple in 2019 separated, and it was an emotional turmoil in the lives of the duo. The duo have been blessed with a daughter named Imara, who will turn 11 in 2025. Now, Avantika has healed from her broken pieces and shared how she destigmatised the topic of divorce with Imrara.
Avantika and Imran have been co-parenting Imrara and shared how getting divorced from your partner does not mean the child would get less love from either of the parents. Avantika sat down for an interview with Janice Sequeria for the Divorce Is Not a Dirty Word podcast and shared how divorce is a question no parent is ever ready to answer. But it’s real. And it’s raw. Avantika revealed that her daughter thought her mom would be replaced and shared that she herself has been a child of divorce. For her, it was very clear that the mistakes she knows her parents made, she is not going to do everything in her power not to make those mistakes. In her words:
"When we separated our baby was very young so initially she had a lot of questions. Does that mean I am going to get a new mumma? I was like no darling you will not get a new mumma. You are stuck with this one and even if they have been in other relationships it does not mean that your parents are not going to be there. That was number one. Another fact was you are loved madly by everyone and none of this is your fault. Imran and I were very consistent about her spending time with the both of us. We have joint custody. She spends half her week with me and half week with him."
Earlier, in a YouTube channel titled Khaane Mein Kya Hai, Imran shared how he has been a hands-on dad, as when Imara was born, he had only made one film. Just before she was born, she chose to stay at home and be present for her birth. Imran also revealed that divorce does have an impact on the psyche of the child, but he and Avantika took care to avoid the same situation with Imara. Imran shared that it always depends on the intent of the parents. His parents separated when he was three years old. Despite their divorce, they made sure that they took care of the actor.
In his words:
"Be there through those initial years, and help raise her. Even though I am divorced, I share her custody and she stays with me from Thursday to Sunday. I wanted to be the guy who does this hands-on. I don’t have a nanny or live-in staff. I wanted to handle all of these things myself.”
What do you think of Avantika Malik's daughter, Imara, thinking of getting a new mom after their separation?
