Mumtaz is known as one of the finest actresses ever in the Hindi film industry. She was one of the highest-paid actors of her time in the 70s. Apart from establishing herself with her acting prowess, Mumtaz was also popular for her doll-like beauty. Many top actors of the time, like Shammi Kapoor, were in love with her, but she rejected them all. The actress had great ambitions and wanted to focus on her acting career.
Among the string of men that she had rejected, the name of the legendary late director, Yash Raj Chopra, is included as well. Known for his romantic movies, the director had proposed to the leading lady, Mumtaz, but she had rejected him. The veteran actress recently got candid about her life and revealed her equation with Yash Chopra.
In an interview with Radio Nasha, the veteran actress opened up about a lot of the things that used to go behind the scenes during the 70s, a very glamorous era for the Hindi film industry. The actress revealed that he used to work as an assistant director under his older brother, B.R Chopra's films. Meanwhile, Mumtaz was the leading lady in those films. Yash Chopra also used to call her 'Moti' affectionately.
Mumtaz, who was known for her one-of-a-kind beauty, said very humbly that she wasn't very beautiful but was rather 'reasonable'. As a result, Yash Chopra liked her very much and proposed marriage to her when he was just starting out in the industry. In the same interview, the actress revealed that she rejected the then-assistant director because she wanted to focus on building her acting career. Mumtaz talked about the sincerity and politeness of Yash Chopra and said:
"He used to like me. I’m not saying I was very beautiful, I was reasonable, so he used to like me. I was young and he was an assistant. Unhone bohut sharafat se, tameez se mujhe shaadi offer kari He said, ‘Moti Moti, I love you’, and I said, ‘No, I want to focus on work, I wanted to get somewhere’."
Mumtaz once said that Yash Chopra had proposed to her 'thousands of times', but she was not interested since there was no compatibility, the actress stated in an interview with Vickey Lalwani. She said that many times the director would say, "Aye moti, I love you yaar, marry me." However, Mumtaz did not have the same feelings for him. Talking about Yash Chopra's courtship and her not feeling the same, the actress said:
“To have such a close relationship with anybody, you have to fall in love with the person. You have to have chemistry. If you don’t have chemistry, how can you live together as a married couple? I never had that chemistry with him.”
