Boney Kapoor is one of the most sought-after Bollywood producers, who has more than 36 movies to his credit. Well, recently, Boney Kapoor made it to the headlines with his debate with Telugu producer, Naga Vamsi. For the unversed, film producers like Boney Kapoor, Naga Vamsi, Archana Kalpathi, and others recently sat for a roundtable discussion with Galatta Plus. Well, it was Boney and Vamsi's debate over Bollywood and South Indian cinema that ended up triggering many, including Bollywood filmmaker, Sanjay Gupta, who called out the Telugu producer for ridiculing a senior producer like Boney Kapoor.
It so happened that during the roundtable discussion, Boney Kapoor was talking about the influence of films of different genres and styles in different regions. He gave an example of how in Russia, Raj Kapoor is still remembered, while in Egypt, people are in love with Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan's craft. He also said how Gulf is a cosmopolitan area. It was Naga Vamsi, who stopped Boney and added that Gulf has a massive market for Malayalam films.
Vamsi didn't stop there and mentioned that although he could sound harsh, South Indian films have changed the perspective of Bollywood in the way the recent films are being made such as Animal, and Jawan. He added that Hindi movies were stuck being made for Bandra and Juhu. He also pointed out how Boney Kapoor, while talking, didn't take any other names of Hindi films except Mughal-E-Azam, and instead, he took the names of Telugu films like Baahubali and RRR. Vamsi can be quoted as saying:
"I have to add to this. This might sound harsh, but we South Indians have changed the way you look at cinema — even for Bollywood. Because you guys were stuck in making films for Bandra and Juhu. But now, with films like ‘RRR’, ‘Baahubali’, ‘Animal’, ‘Jawan’, etc., these have kind of changed your version. After Mughal-E-Azam, you mentioned films like Baahubali and RRR, which were Telugu films. You never really spoke of a Hindi film’s name after Mughal-E-Azam.”
Boney Kapoor disagreed with this and said that he was speaking in broader terms, and that doesn't mean he missed out on the names of other films. He also stated that it's not that the Telugu films have taught Indian cinema. Vamsi interrupted again and said that he didn't talk about 'teaching' but 'rediscovering'. Boney Kapoor disagreed again and added that Allu Arjun, himself, is a fan of Amitabh Bachchan, while Vamsi argued that the Pushpa 2 actor is a fan of Chiranjeevi too. Boney Kapoor replied that language was never a barrier, be it Tamil, Telugu, or Hindi film, and in today's time, Marathi films are also making Rs. 100 crore.
Naga Vamsi's words and statements didn't sit well with filmmaker, Sanjay Gupta, who didn't take time to lash out at the Telugu producer. Sanjay pointed out how Vamsi was not only disrespecting a senior producer like Boney but was also acting 'obnoxious'. He further questioned if Vamsi would have the guts to talk in this 'disrespecting' manner with producers like Allu Arvind or Suresh Babu. Naga Vamsi also commented that Mumbai couldn't sleep well after Pushpa 2 made Rs. 86 crore a night. Sanjay hit back and replied that they all slept well, knowing that Rs. 86 crore was collected by Bollywood exhibitors, and it must be Vamsi's mentality not to sleep well at other's success.
