Before getting engaged to Sobhita Dhulipala, Naga Chaitanya was married to South Indian actress, Samantha Ruth Prabhu. The former couple had first crossed paths while on the set of the 2010 Telugu romantic film Ye Maaya Chesave. After dating for some time, Chay and Samantha decided to take their relationship to the next level by tying the knot in 2017.
However, Chaitanya and Samantha's marriage couldn't withstand the test of time, and they parted ways in 2021. The former couple took to social media to announce their divorce and has remained silent on the reason behind it to date. While Chaitanya and Samantha avoid answering any questions related to their divorce, the Telugu actor's father, Nagarjuna Akkineni, once spoke about it.

Nagarjuna sat for an interview with Pinkvilla back in 2022 after the success of his film, Brahmastra: Part One Shiva, where he was asked about his reaction to the articles that were written about his son's personal life. The 64-year-old actor shared that Chaitanya's happiness has been his priority. Calling the latter's divorce with Samantha 'unfortunate', Nagarjuna said:
"He is happy, that’s all I see. That’s good enough for me. It’s an experience that happened to him. Unfortunate."
Further, Chaitanya's father emphasised that as their relationship was over, there was no need to mop about it. Nagarjuna also mentioned that the relationship with Samantha was out of his son's and their whole family's life, so people also need to get over it. He was quoted as saying:
"We can’t keep moping about it. It’s gone. It’s out of our lives. So I hope it will be out of everybody’s life."

Prior to Nagarjuna's comment on Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu's divorce, the Telugu actor had remarked that he was 'bored' of people asking him about his relationship with his former wife, and said, "We said what we have to. Beyond that, it’s just people trying to fill up columns, and there’s nothing else." Meanwhile, Samantha mentioned that she did not have an amicable bond with Chaitanya when she appeared on Koffee With Karan. She said:
"Like if you put us both in a room, you have to hide sharp objects? Yeah. As of now, yes."
Samantha and Chaitanya announced their divorce just four days before their fourth marriage anniversary in 2021.
