Neena Gupta Celebrates Her Birthday With 'Metro In Dino' Team, Fans Defend Her Against Ageist Trolls

Neena Gupta is not the one to follow societal norms, and she has proved this again and again. The actress has made some bold choices ever since she made it into the film industry. From her role as a young widow in the 1994 Woh Chokri to a middle-aged pregnant woman in Bhadaai Ho, which was released in 2018, Neena has never shied away from the spotlight, and real life is not that different for her, either.

Neena Gupta recently celebrated her 66th birthday in style, which was also the trailer launch of her upcoming film, Metro...In Dino, starring Pankaj Tripathi, Anupam Kher and Konkona Sen Sharma. However, it was her outfit with biscuit bra that stole the spotlight, generating buzz on social media. What started as a joyous celebration of the film and Neena ended up being an internet trolling session after the clips from the event surfaced on social media. 

The event, which was also attended by castmates, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Pankaj Tripathi, and director, Anurag Basu, filled Neena with beaming joy as she cut her birthday cake and celebrated with her friends. Neena was basking in the cheers, applause, and warm wishes at the trailer launch, sharing the slice with her co-stars and director, and spreading the birthday cheer.

Neena Gupta donned a beautiful white 'Rann Kaftan' layered with a gold 'Biscuit Bra' adorned with house charms. The outfit came from her daughter, Masaba Gupta's fashion label, House of Masaba. However, for some netizens, it proved to be a little too hot, and they started posting negative comments about her.

Fans defend Neena Gupta's choice of outfit

Several trolls asked the actress to 'dress according to her age', with comments like, "Dressing acchi nahi hai umar k hisaab se." Another penned, "Kya kar rahi ho aunty kapde to dhang ke pahan lo." Another said, "Pehnne wale nahi dekhne walo ko sharm aa rahi hai." However, the trolls were soon shut down by the actress' fans. A user penned, "How can you expect women to be this confident when they’re bashed left, right and centre." Another commented, "Sometimes women live their whole life according to society's pressures and feel caged. Finally, at this age, she is feeling free. Nobody should comment badly about her."

A user penned, "Skin show and confidence is not the point here. It’s about her living her life on her own terms by wearing what she likes." A user noted, "Stunning for her age, and it’s most likely the younger ones who just wish they could look half as stunning as she does… even at the own age who have felt the need to belittle her." A user in a long note stated:

"Just loved the way she looks. It takes a lot of guts to come out wearing something like this at this age. We always associate age with dressing. But I think what’s more important is how u carry yourself. A lot of youngsters are wearing skimpy clothes, believing that they look hot, but sadly, they look so vulgar. And she, at this age, looks effortless."

Neena Gupta was last seen in the film, Aachari Baa. She will soon be seen in Metro...In Dino, alongside Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Ali Fazal, Anupam Kher, Pankaj Tripathi, and Konkona Sen Sharma. Directed by Anurag Basu, the film will narrate stories showing different couples navigating the complex emotions that come with love and commitment. The film will be released on July 4, 2025, and is a soul sequel to Life in a...Metro.
