Neena Gupta is one of the most versatile actresses in the Hindi film industry. Even at the age of 65, the actress has been giving her fans some memorable films, and with the special roles in movies that are written for her, Neena has set a trend out there for people from all age groups. She recently bagged the 70th National Award for her masterclass acting skills in the movie, Uunchai. However, in a recent interview, the actress talked about the struggles of the early days of her career, when she came to Mumbai from Delhi with her ex-beau, and shared how he would mock her for taking up a job as a waitress.
In a recent conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Neena Gupta stated that when she came to Mumbai from Delhi with her ex-beau, she took up a job as a waitress at a cafe, wherein she used to make bharta, and in exchange, she would get free dinner from the owner. During that time, neither Neena, nor her ex-beau had any jobs, and they would just sit and hang around in the cafe, where the actress used to work, waiting for the directors or producers to contact her. In Neena's words:
"When I came to Mumbai from Delhi with my ex-boyfriend, both of us didn’t have work, so I started working at the Prithvi café. I would make bharta in the evening, and the owner used to give me free dinner. In the interval, I used to make Irish coffee. We would just hang out there waiting for a director or producer would spot us.”
Going further in the interview, Neena Gupta shared that one day, her then ex-beau, just out of the blue, being drunk, insulted her for working as a waitress in the cafe. The actress stated that she was asked by her then-beau, if she had come down to Mumbai just to work as a waitress while he used to borrow money from her to buy cigarettes. Thanking God for not ending up marrying her then ex-beau, Neena shared:
"One day, my boyfriend came, and I think he was drunk, and he asked if I had come all the way from Delhi only to become a waitress here. He mocked me, despite me paying for his cigarette money. He was questioning me for working hard, but wasn’t bothered about borrowing money from me. Thank God, I didn’t marry him."
Earlier, in an interview with Showsha, Neena Gupta shared how the need for money at the very beginning of her career, left her with no options but to take up some bad work, for which she would even pray to God, that those pictures wouldn't release. She added that after being established in her career, she now has the freedom to choose any work she would like, and reject anything that is not something that she prefers.
In the same interview, Neena mentioned that when she came from Mumbai to Delhi, within just three months, she wanted to go back to Delhi again and continue with her studies. The veteran actress shared that Mumbai is such a place that if someone even thinks of giving up in the night, the next morning they would have to think to try again, and hope they would get some job definitely.
