'DNA' Review: Atharvaa And Nimisha Sajayan Deliver Emotional Depth But Plot Lacks Narrative

DNA is a Tamil-language investigative thriller directed by Nelson Venkatesan, who is known for his previous works like Farhana and Monster. The movie is co-written by Nelson and Athisha Vino and stars Atharvaa as 'Anand' and Nimisha Sajayan as 'Divya' in the leading roles, with notable actors like Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Balaji Sakthivel in supporting roles. DNA debuted theatrically in India on June 20, 2025, and now the movie is now set for an OTT platform release. It will be available for streaming on Jiohotstar from July 19, 2025. Here’s all you need to know before watching the film

Plot of DNA revolves around a married couple and their newborn

The story of DNA is centred around a young married couple played by Atharvaa and Nimish, whose lives are turned upside down when 'Divya', the wife, insists their newborn isn’t actually their child, leading 'Anand', the husband, into a dark conspiracy involving infant swapping. Their emotional journey forms the film’s core.

Atharvaa, who is portraying 'Anand', transitions from a drunkard to a determined father, through this film Atharvaa is offering one of his most layered performances to date. Nimisha Sajayan brings an emotional honesty to 'Divya', who is a character living with borderline personality disorder. Nimisha avoids the cliches and portrays 'Divya' with utmost sensitivity. Together, their chemistry provides the film with a heart and an emotional experience for the audience.

DNA deals with sensitive issues of mental health and motherhood

'Divya’s' declaration at the hospital that the baby she received is not hers launches the plot of the investigative thriller. Despite her mental health history, her husband, 'Anand', still decides to stand by her and exposes the conspiracy. According to the critics, the film beautifully explores societal biases and post-partum trauma, an issue that remains remarkably undiscovered in Indian cinema.

DNA is an investigative thriller done right till the first half

Local cop, 'Chinnaswamy', played by Balaji Sakthivel, teams up with 'Anand' to expose a child-trafficking syndicate. The investigation is filled with unexpected twists and a chilling portrayal of an organised crime. The screenplay creates a sense of urgency and intensity that keeps the audience on their toes. However, critics argue that key revelations surface too early, which weakens the overall suspense. It leaves the movie lying flat too soon.

DNA has some storytelling issues, its rushed narration and outdated tropes may leave the audience bored

While conceptually, DNA is a powerful story, sometimes it feels hurried. Critics argued that the first act of the movie spends too much time on melodrama, featuring bar songs and flashbacks, and forgets that it is an investigative thriller. 'Divya’s' hope which should have been a major plotline is somewhat sidelined, and some commercial clichés, such as item songs and a soap-opera climax, remain part of the storyline, this all undermines the film's emotional core.

Audience reaction towards DNA

DNA narrates a story which explores on the issues of mental health and societal standards. Through 'Divya’s' struggle, it challenges the stigma and questions how institutions often dismiss sensitive women and their struggles. The audience appears to be pleased with the fresh new narrative and is impressed by the performances of lead actors, Atharvaa and Nimisha Sajayan. One user said, ‘Nimisha and her expressions!!’ while the other said, ‘Nimisha Sajayan, a talented actress and Athrav also look good in this movie.’

Final Verdict for DNA: It’s a strong intent, but a flawed execution

DNA has all the ingredients to make it a compelling thriller. It includes various cinematic aspects, such as high emotional stakes, social relevance, suspense, and strong performances from its actors, these all, make it a compelling investigative thriller. However, uneven pacing, early plot reveals, and narrative conveniences hinder its progress. For viewers who prioritise emotional depth over polished story, the film delivers for them, but perfection remains just a little out of reach. Nelson’s vision is noble; however, the execution just misses the mark.
