If one traces back to the history of movies and the TV industry, it is filled with famous title cards having their own classy, signature sounds. Whether it is the 20th Century Fox Fanfare song or the introduction sound of HBO, the list is endless. However, since the last decade, a new title sound has paved its way into the league of the most recognised sounds, and it is none other than Netflix's Tudum. The sound has become so famous since 2015 that Netflix fans are used to the sound of Tudum.
Tudum, as the sound goes like is played by the giant OTT platform, Netflix, before any content is streamed. It is a punchy noise and has become so famous that even Netflix's online magazine, Tudum, got named after the sound effect. Now, the Tudum fan fest is around the corner, which will take place on May 31, 2025, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time or 5 p.m. Pacific Time. The event will be live-hosted from Kia Forum in Los Angeles. You may have heard the Tudum sound a million times. However, do you know that the sound is reportedly connected to Netflix's TV show, The House of Cards, and it has a connection with Kevin Spacey's ring? There are many theories as well to the Tudum sound.
Did you know that the Tudum sound was actually a technical term which was reportedly given by Netflix's chief engineers since 2015. This was because the OTT giant was blowing into the entertainment domain. According to a report by Fox16, the sound designers of Netflix had shared that the sound Tudum heard in the introduction of any content on Netflix is actually the recording of a wedding ring being knocked against a piece of furniture.
The sound was created by Lon Bender, an Oscar-winning sound designer who recorded the noise made by his ring after he hit a cabinet in his room and then remixed the created sound with a hammer striking an iron block among the other noises. Bender, in an interview of the Twenty Thousand Hertz podcast, shared that to add different qualities to it, he sweetened it with other things, which is normal for them in the film-sound domain. To give a finishing touch, Bender, along with composer Charlie Compagna, created a blossom or a synth-like humming tone and used a guitar effect to place it after the knocking noise was created.
It will be totally unfair not to hear the Tudum sound when you open Netflix. It is like not seeing a dog walking on its legs. However, fans of Netflix are convinced that the Tudum sound can actually be traced back to Netflix's House Of Cards venture, which was the first TV series produced for the giant OTT platform. Well, in the second season of the show, according to The Star.Co.UK Frank Underwood a.k.a Kevin was seen slamming his hand down on the desk, and it is his ring that created a typical sound which was familiar.

If you have been watching content on Netflix, you will know that the Tudum sound is as famous as the iconic 'N' of Netflix that comes on the big screen. The sound itself is the start of a new binge adventure for the users who have already claimed in the past with theories that the sound was taken from the House Of Cards. Especially when Frank Underwood double-knock on the Oval Office desk, it showcases the ending of House of Cards Season 2. Netflix users had already gone into a frenzy when they came to know about this and found the connection with The House of Cards obvious.
It was during a podcast episode of Twenty Thousand Hertz in 2020, where the VP of Netflix Product, Todd Yellin, revealed how in 2015/ 2016 the company wanted to create their famous sound. When Lon Bender heard his wedding ring knock on a wooden table, the concept of a ring got merged. The giant platform in public eyes has never linked the Tudum sound to the House Of Cards. Kevin was removed from the show after there were allegations of sexual misconduct on him. Yellin also shared that the goal was to create a sound that would instil excitement in the viewers.
However, fans of The House Of Cards had shared that Lon Bender's wedding ring theory was an attempt by Netflix to downplay Kevin. Although Netflix representatives did not comment about it but Kevin's fans felt that they were maintaining a safe hand distance.
Do you feel that the Netflix mystery related to the Tudum sound has been solved? Do you feel that Kevin Spacey's House Of Cards is credited for the sound creation?
