Nick Reiner Was Diagnosed With Schizophrenia Weeks Before The Murder, Medication Made Him 'Erratic'

Hours later, the police had arrested the couple's son, Nick Reiner, for the alleged murder. Now, days after the terrifying murder, new details regarding Nick's mental health have emerged.

Nick Reiner was diagnosed with schizophrenia weeks before the murder

The demise of Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner at the hands of their own son, Nick Reiner, left the entire world shocked. The gruesome murder sent chills down everyone's spine. However, now, it is being reported that Nick was diagnosed with schizophrenia before the gruesome murders of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner. In a conversation with TMZ, a source has revealed that the medications Nick was taking were allegedly making him act "erratic and dangerous."

A source in a conversation on Friday, December 19, 2025 (ET), revealed that Nick Reiner was under the care of a psychiatrist for mental illness. The source claimed that his behavior had become "alarming" in the weeks leading up to his parents' stabbing deaths at their LA residence. They added that about 3-4 weeks before the murder, the doctors reportedly changed Nick's meds, at which point he became "out of his head." They were reportedly in the process of adjusting his meds to stabilise him when tragedy struck.

Nick Reiner's substance abuse made his schizophrenia worse

According to TMZ, Nick Reiner had recently received care at an expensive Los Angeles-based rehab facility that specialises in mental illness and substance abuse. The outlet revealed that Nick's substance abuse worsened his schizophrenia, which further led to his erratic behaviour. Nick is reportedly expected to plead not guilty by reason of insanity.

However, Nick Reiner, who used to live at his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner's guesthouse in Brentwood, has a history of violence and d**g addiction. The actor had been in and out of rehabs almost all of his adult life. According to reports, he started using at the age of 15 and has been admitted to over 20 rehab centers.

According to Mayo Clinic, schizophrenia is a serious mental health condition that affects how people think, feel, and behave. The disorder can lead to losing touch with reality, which can make daily living extremely hard. People suffering from schizophrenia require lifelong treatment, including medication, talk therapy, and help learning how to manage daily activities. However, since the people suffering from the condition don't even realise they have the health condition, and believe that they don't need any help. It may result in a mix of delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, trouble with thinking, and lack of motivation, according to the American Psychiatric Association.

According to reports, two people were found dead on the afternoon of December 14, 2025, (ET) inside a Brentwood home owned by director and actor, Rob Reiner, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded to the property on Chadbourne Avenue around 3:30 p.m. and found the bodies of a man and a woman, approximately 78 and 68 years old, respectively, inside the residence. Hours later, it was confirmed that the deceased were the director and his wife.
