Noelia Castillo Ramos, a 25-year-old Spanish woman from Barcelona became the subject of a landmark legal and ethical debate after successfully fighting for her right to die through voluntary euthanasia. She passed away on March 26, 2026, at a long-term care facility in Sant Pere de Ribes. Noeila's request for euthanasia was based on a prolonged period of suffering from physical and mental issues, stemming from a tragic incident. As the case gains worldwide attention, here's what we know about her family so far and their reaction to her big decision.
No parents want to see their kids die, and the same was the case for Noelia Castillo Ramos' parents. They were absolutely against her undergoing euthanasia and voluntarily ending her life. Noeila's father, Geronimo Castillo was the primary legal opponent to her request for euthanasia. He led a 601-day legal campaign against his daughter's euthanasia plea, supported by the conservative group Abogados Cristianos (Christian Lawyers). Geronimo argued that Noeila lacked the mental capacity to make such a big decision due to her diagnosed personality disorder. Regarding her father, Noeila told the Spanish program, Y Ahora Sonsoles:
"I don't feel sorry for him [Geronimo] anymore. He hasn't respected my decision and he never will...I understand. He's a father and he doesn't want to lose a daughter, but he doesn't listen to me. He never calls me, he never writes to me. The only thing he does is bring me food. Why does he want me alive? To keep me in a hospital?"

Noelia's father also pointed to "the obligation of the state to protect the lives of people, especially the most vulnerable, as is the case with a young person with mental health problems." She stated that she did not have a close relationship with her father and felt he "never respected" her decision. Her mother, Yolanda Ramos, also publicly disagreed with her choice of euthanasia; however, she tried to respect her daughter's autonomy and did not cause any legal or other kind of disruption. Yolanda stated that although she wanted Noelia to live, she would "always be by her side until the very last moment."

The Spanish courts, including the Constitutional Court and European Court of Human Rights, ultimately rejected Noeila's parents' appeals, ruling that she was mentally capable of exercising her right to die under Spain's 2021 euthanasia law. Like Noelia's parents, her sister was reportedly not in favour of euthanasia. She stated in a final interview with Y Ahora Sonsoles that she would prioritise her own peace over her responsibility towards her parents and sister. Noelia Castillo Ramos mentioned she was aware that her death through euthanasia would take an emotional toll on her loved ones; however, taking the step was necessary for her. She stated:
"I want to go now and stop suffering, period. None of my family is in favour of euthanasia. But what about all the pain I've suffered during all these years? The happiness of a father, a mother or a sister cannot be more important than the life of a daughter."

Noelia's parents separated when she was 13 years old, according to JIJI PRESS. She spent much of her childhood in the care of the Catalan government due to their reported personal struggles with mental health and substance abuse, which led to a loss of custody. She recounted having a difficult childhood due to her parents' separation, and her relationship with her grandmother was also strained, thereby leaving her with no family member to rely on. She even said, "I can't stand this family anymore" while explaining her decision to undergo euthanasia.
