Nushrratt Bharuccha Reveals Facing Sexism And Inequality In Bollywood, 'I Gave A Blockbuster But...'

Nushrratt Bharuccha has established herself as a talented and versatile actress in Bollywood, capable of portraying a diverse range of roles, from the flirtatious and manipulative ‘Neha’ in Pyaar Ka Punchnama to the fearless ‘Sakshi’ in Chhorii. However, her journey to fame has not been easy. Being a female artist and an outsider, she has felt gender bias and unequal opportunities from her male co-stars. In a recent conversation, the actress candidly pulled back the curtain on the glam world of Bollywood to reveal a far less glittery truth.

Nushrratt Bharuccha opens up about not getting the same treatment as her male co-stars

Speaking to Nayandeep Rakshit on his YouTube channel, Nushrratt spoke up about the lesser-talked-about reality of female stars in Bollywood. Reflecting on her own experience, the actress pointed out how actresses don’t get the same treatment as their male counterparts, not even when it comes to something as basic as washrooms or vanity vans. She revealed:

“There have been times when I went around asking, ‘Can I use the hero’s vanity van for 5 minutes? He’s not here anyway. Can I use the washrooms?’ Because they are nicer than mine. However, I won’t complain or bicker at that time. I tell myself that I will bring myself to that point where I get these things by default.”

Nushrratt revealed that even after delivering major hits, she has struggled to find new opportunities, unlike her male counterparts. She recalled the heartbreaking aftermath of her biggest box-office success, when her talent agency dropped her. While outsiders assumed she was being selective with scripts, in reality, she had no team, no guidance, and no work. She was quoted as saying:

“After the film became huge, my manager called me for a coffee… and said, ‘Sorry, we have to let you go.’ I was speechless. I started crying while they were listing their reasons… I had just given a blockbuster and I was sitting alone at a cafe, crying into my coffee. It was the most terrible feeling. I had nothing lined up, and no one to help me figure it out.”

When everyone except Nushrratt flew business class

Nushhratt revealed another shocking incident about flying economy class while playing a small role in a film, while all other actors were seated in business class. While some of them had invited her to sit with them, the Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety star remained seated in the seat allotted to her, determined to fly business on the production house’s money. Nushrratt recalled:

“I was in economy class along with the assistants of technicians. It was an international flight, and the journey was quite long. I had made friends with some of the people (in business class). They said, ‘Nush, come and sit with us’... But I said, I won’t come because this is the place that was given to me. But I will come to a place where I will fly business class and they will book my tickets with the production house’s money, not mine.”
