Om Puri's Controversial Marriages, Cheated First Wife While She Was Pregnant, Assaulted Second Wife

One of the finest actors of Indian cinema, Om Prakash Puri’s illustrious acting career made a significant mark on the industry. He was nothing like the quintessential hero of Bollywood, but the actor left an everlasting legacy with his superb performances. Best known for author-backed roles, Om proved his versatility as an actor in films like Aakrosh, Arohan, Ardh Satya, Sadgati, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Chachi 420, Hera Pheri and many more. The actor was nominated for the BAFTA award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in the comedy-drama, East Is East.

Om Puri’s first marriage to Annu Kapoor’s sister, Seema Kapoor

Om Puri met Seema Kapoor when she was just 19. She is the sister of actors, Annu Kapoor and Ranjit Kapoor. Despite the age gap of 11 years, Seema and Om fell in love and dated for many years before tying the knot in 1990. Seema has pursued her career in theatre, and their shared passion for art brought Seema and Om close.

Om Puri cheated on Seema Kapoor when she was pregnant

Within a few months of their marriage, Om got involved with a journalist named Nandita. In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Seema talked about the actor’s extra-marital affair and said that Om met Nandita when he was shooting for the Hollywood film, City Of Joy, and this turned her life upside down.

Seema was pregnant when she got to know about Om’s affair with Nandita, and still, she tried to work on her marriage. Om, on the other hand, would find excuses to fight with Seema and would come home drunk.

Om Puri accused Seema Kapoor of adultery

After trying hard to save her marriage, Seema gave up and walked out of his home. Things took an ugly turn when Om Puri filed a legal case against her and accused her of adultery. He even refused to accept the child she was pregnant with. It was at that time that she decided to fight. After the court case, Seema got an alimony of Rs. 6 lakhs, which she accepted, keeping her self-respect aside since the financial condition at her place was very tight after her marriage.

Her brother, Annu Kapoor had even taken a loan of Rs. 5 lakhs from Yash Chopra to pay her lawyer. However, when she lost her child, instead of consoling her, Om Puri sent Rs. 25,000 to her through his secretary, which the former rejected.

Om Puri’s second marriage to Nandita Puri and domestic violence charge

After his divorce from Seema Kapoor, Om Puri married journalist, Nandita Puri and the couple welcomed a son, Ishaan Puri. In 2009, Nandita wrote a biography on Om titled Unlikely Hero: The Story of Om Puri. In the book, Nandita penned Om Puri’s sexual encounter with a 55-year-old maid when he was 14.

After the book’s release, people started criticising the veteran actor, and he became furious. In a throwback interview, Om criticised Nandita for her decision to write about his affair as 'cheap'. He stated:

“I don't care if she is my wife, I won't let her get away with it. How was I to know she would use the incident from my life to sell her book?"

In 2013, Nandita accused Om Puri of domestic violence and stated that the actor beat her with a stick and hurled abuses at her. As a result, the two opted for a judicial separation. Even after his divorce from his first wife, Seema, Om had been in touch with her, and they had a warm bond.
