Padmini Kolhapure is considered to be one of the leading actresses of the '80s. Over her career of four decades in the entertainment space, Padmini has worked in more than 75 films. She began her career at the age of 7, and by the age of 15, she was the recipient of the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. Apart from being an actress, Padmini is also a singer. In her personal life, she got married to Pradeep Sharma, a.k.a Tutu Sharma, and they have a son, Priyank Sharma. Well, it was in 1981, when Padmini made it to the headlines after she ended up kissing Prince Charles during his India visit.
It was in 1981, when Prince Charles arrived in India, and witnessed Indian filmmaking while being on the set of Aishta Aishta. The movie featured Padmini Kolhapure. Well, during Prince Charles' visit on the set, Padmini ended up giving a kiss on his cheek, which grabbed a whole lot of attention. It happened during the Indian aarti, which took place to welcome Prince Charles, and Padmini welcomed him with a kiss on his cheek. Surely, it was a big thing in the '80s, and the entire media was rife with the same topic of Padmini kissing Prince Charles. And even the British media tagged a nickname to Padmini's name, which was 'The woman who kissed Prince Charles'.
It was a few years later in 2013, when Padmini Kolhapure talked about the incident that brought her unwanted attention back in 1981. The actress revealed that she just greeted Prince Charles with a kiss, and back in those days, it had become a huge thing. Padmini further revealed that when she was holidaying in London, one of the British immigration officers even remembered her and asked her if she was the one to kiss Prince Charles. In Padmini Kolhapure's words:
"He was visiting Mumbai and I don’t know what he thought that he wanted to see a shoot. We were shooting for Ahista Ahista at Rajkamal Studios. Shashikalaji did his Indian aarti and I just greeted him with a peck on his cheek. But, in those days, it became a big thing. I remember I went to London for a holiday and this British immigration officer asked me, ‘Are you the same person who kissed Prince Charles?’ I was left embarrassed."
Padmini Kolhapure met the love of her life, Pradeep Sharam during the shoot of the film, Aisa Pyaar Kahan. Back in those days, love marriage was a big no for the actress' family, and this left Padmini with no option but to elope with Pradeep and get married. Pradeep and Padmini got married in producer Ashok Thakeria’s house. It was her sister, Shivangi Kapoor, and brother-in-law, Shakti Kapoor who had helped the couple to get married. Later, the couple had a son, Priyank Sharma.
In an interview with Filmfare, Padmini Kolhapure revealed that she later regretted that she had to hurt her parents to get married to Pradeep, and she could have just waited until they agreed. The actress further shared that she and her parents reconciled after her son, Priyank was born. For the unversed, it was in 2021, when Padmini and Pradeep's son, Priyank got married to the love of his life, Shaza Morani.
