Pakistani Stylist Slams Indian Fashion Influencer For 'Tacky' Mawra Hocane Remarks, Latter Responds

Indian fashion influencer, Sufi Motiwala recently found himself in hot waters as one of his fashion criticisms did not sit well with fans and fashion enthusiasts. We are talking about Pakistani actress, Mawra Hocane’s wedding look. The actress, who got married to Ameer Gilani on February 5, 2025, fashioned a unique lehenga-choli which was crafted to complement her mother-in-law’s wedding dupatta, adding a vintage charm with immense sentimental value to her look.

Sufi Motiwala’s ‘tacky’ comments on Mawra Hocane’s wedding look

Rather than flowing with the trends of reds and pastels, Mawra opted for a look with a unique sentimental charm. She looked like a vintage bride by fashioning her MIL’s wedding dupatta which was inherited from Ameer’s grandmother. Mawra beautifully restored the outfit and even wore the jewellery that belonged to Ameer's grandma. However, for Indian fashion critic, Sufi Motiwala, it couldn’t create a statement. Taking to his IG handle, Sufi criticised Mawra’s wedding lehenga by saying:

“This is what happens when you live in a world without Sabyasachi and Manish Malhotra. The fabric choice is takiana. The way that this torso has been constructed, I mean, these red lines are so questionable, like, why do they exist? It is with a sad heart that I have to say that the only thing I like about this look is the dupatta. I specifically do not like the colour collage happening.”

Pakistani stylist, Zahra Sarfraz, slams Sufi’s remarks

Sufi’s remarks didn’t sit well with fans, stylists and fashion enthusiasts. Pakistani stylist, Zahra Sarfraz did not hold back in her response, calling out Sufi’s narrow fashion perspective and questioning his lack of appreciation for originality. She openly slammed Sufi on IG by criticising his limited understanding of originality and value. Zahra remarked:

“Sufi, what I don't understand is we extend so much respect, love, and support your way. Why is it so difficult to extend the same respect towards us? The world that you can't understand and comprehend is one of sentimental value…It is so beautiful that Mawra took her mother-in-law's shaadi ka dupatta and built the entire outfit around it. I guess that's something you can do when you have a personality. What I find truly tack is living outside the world of originality, sticking to two to three designers, making yourself feel better with that one label… I guess you have to be living out of ‘Takistan’ to understand things that are larger than life.”

Sufi responds to the backlash

Following the online outrage, Sufi posted a response, stating that while he now understands the heritage and sentimental value behind Mawra’s look, his critique was purely based on personal aesthetics. While he did not direct the video to anyone in particular, his response has been perceived as an overall response to the backlash he received after the critique. In Sufi’s words:

“I infamously did not like this look yesterday but I have been culturally educated on all the references, techniques, and the heritage value that this outfit has, but I just want to let everybody know. I never said that it was not culturally good. I just said I do not like it on a visual level, personally… in reality, I'm just talking about the outfit… this is a page where I share my personal opinions on fashion and I would love it if you debated with me, shared your opinions with me in the comments. But don't harass me and send me back to therapy.”
