'Peacemaker 2' First Review: John Cena's Exeptional Performance Shines In An Otherwise Dull Season

Peacemaker has been making the headlines for a long time now. The superhero black comedy drama series, set in the DC universe, has fans eagerly awaiting its second season. Well, their wait finally reached an end as Season 2 of the show premiered, and the red carpet for the same was held on August 13, 2025. Ahead of the release of the season, the first reviews of the show have been pouring in.

Peacemaker Season 2 is a familiar ride that goes nowhere new

Peacemaker Season 2 picks off with 'Christopher Smith' exploring a Multiverse detour. However, instead of offering a bold new direction or emotional depth, the show delivers a rather flat continuation. The connection of 'Chris' encountering a version of himself with everything he ever dreamed of should be a powerful ground for character growth, but it is met with a dragged storyline, with the core stretched across eight episodes. While early moments gave some hope to the emotional growth, especially in terms of his friendships with 'Leota Adebayo' and 'Emilia Harcourt', it is ultimately the same story with a different cover.

Tropes like 'Harcourt's' downward spiral and 'Rick Flag Sr.'s' half-hearted revenge makes the plot feel further uninspired. The once-compelling 'Harcourt' is reduced to an extremely predictable arc. Even with Multiverse at its fingertips, the series refused to take any creative risk, which came as a shock to the fans. Additionally, despite the entertaining set pieces and characters, the show lacks narrative urgency, and the stakes feel inconsequential.

John Cena shines as the 'Peacemaker', but the script leaves netizens unimpressed

Fans were over the moon to see the Peacemaker Season 2 and the return of John Cena, and while the actor-wrestler didn't disappoint, the rest remained a dull journey. John brought his 'A' game with humanity, humour, and surprising vulnerability to a character who easily could be cartoonish. The WWE star was a complete surprise in the series, as his ability to make 'Chris Smith' look both absurd and sympathetic remains one of the show's greatest strengths. Danielle Brooks continued to shine as 'Leota', while Jennifer Holland, despite being saddled with a weak arc, brings emotional weight to 'Harcourt'.

With a cast this amazing, viewers had expected the Peacemaker Season 2 to blow them away. However, unfortunately, it remained off its game. The visual flair and music choices kept things energetic, and the 'Previously in the DCU' recap was a clever way of making the season accessible, but it lacked plot. While fun surprises and quality action sequences can't mask the thin storytelling, ultimately, Season 2 is entertaining but feels more like a side story than essential viewing.

Critics react to the series

Peacemaker Season 2 reviews have been coming in. A user wrote, "Three and a half years later, an official universe rebrand and double name change for its streaming service has only given this show the opportunity to get better." Another penned, "The fight scenes are still inventive while everyone works with a far more modest budget than Gunn gets in his movies." A user penned, "Cena nails this season's emotional and moral complexities with the aplomb of an Actors Studio graduate…the most thrilling part of this performance is the way he makes this Super fully Human."
