Who Was Planet Earth Cameraman Doug Allan? Died While Trekking In Nepal At The Age Of 74

The famous Blue Earth and Planet Earth photographer Doug Allan passed away in Nepal. At the age of 74, Doug was trekking when he died. It is worth mentioning that he was also famously known for working with the Daredevil Scots. He was a famous Scottish wildlife cameraman, who simply loved photography and was known for working in extreme conditions of the Arctic and Antarctic.

Who was Doug Allan?

Doug Allan was a famous Scottish wildlife cameraman and marine biologist. He was born in 1951. Talking about his education accolades, he studied marine biology and worked as a research driver in Antarctica's extreme conditions. It was there that he developed a love for photographing wildlife. He went on to make his footing in the photography business. He contributed to major BBC documentaries such as Planet Earth, The Blue Planet and Frozen Planet.

Over his impressive career, Allan had captured several photos of animals, including polar bears, penguins, whales and orcas. He is known for working with wildlife in dangerous and freezing environments. His work helped him get prestigious awards, including Emmys and BAFTAs.

Doug Allan's scary assignment to where polar bears live

He was also famous for going to Kong Karls Land and returning from the Arctic islands, where polar bears live. The area is strictly off-limits, despite the fact that Doug Allan had taken permission to film sequences there for David Attenborough's Planet Earth series. In April, the temperature drops to -32C, and working with a camera in deep snow looks no less than a nightmare. But for Allan, it was his love, and he would walk five or more hours a day to watch polar bear dens in the snow slopes for 23 days. He was able ot meet one mother bear and her cub. In an interview, Allan Dough talked about his experience and said:

"We find a new hole and wait. We shuffle, hop, bend, stretch and run to stay warm. Five hours of watching and then with no warning at all I catch a glimpse so brief that I almost miss it. But the camera's locked on the hole on full zoom and my eye's very quickly on the viewfinder."

Allan talked about his experience shooting the polar bears and how he felt  when he first got a glimpse of the polar bear after 23 days. He revealed how it was to see the polar bear in full zoom as she rested on the snow in front of the hole. She looked at him but wasn't scared of his presence. He said:

"Nothing for a couple of seconds and then an unmistakable black nose. Nose become muzzle, grows bigger to become full head and in less than a minute she has her front legs out and is resting on the snow in front of the hole. She's looking at me but she's not bothered. I've just pulled out of a close-up thinking this can't get much better … when she sets off on a long slide down the slope. I'd swear it's partly in sheer pleasure. Clearly it's their first view of the world … It's showtime on the slopes and we have front-row seats."

Over the years, as wildlife photography evolved with new equipment and high-tech gear, Allan still stayed rooted to his old means. As per him, there are massive skills used in filming wildlife photography which can be learned by a human and not clicked by just a device.
