Once in the course of history, there will come one person who will completely change it. The late Princess Diana is one of such individuals whose brilliance transcended her life on Earth. Her 36-year-long life was full of betrayal, humanitarian work, kindness, privilege and vulnerability. Born as Diana Frances Spencer, the late Princess of Wales is still loved by people worldwide. August 31, 2023, marked the 26th death anniversary of the much-loved member of the British royal family.
On September 1, 2023, just a day after Princess Diana's 26th death anniversary, ABC’s Good Morning America released tapes with Princess Diana’s startling confessions related to the present King of the United Kingdom, Charles III. In the covertly recorded tapes from the early 1990s, the late princess shockingly revealed information about her then-husband, Charles.

Princess Diana revealed that the present King, Charles expressed ‘disappointment’ after Prince Harry's birth. During a chat with her mother, Frances Shand Kydd, on Prince Harry’s christening, Charles III said he wanted a daughter, not a son the second time. Princess Diana said:
“At Harry’s christening, Charles went up to mummy and said, ‘We’re so disappointed, thought it would be a girl.'”
This remark by the now-King Charles infuriated Diana’s mother, who snapped off at him. This incident soured the relationship between Charles and her mother. She mentioned in the tapes:
“Mummy snapped his head off and said, ‘You should realise how lucky you are to have a child that’s normal.' Ever since that day, the shutters have come down. That’s what he does when he gets somebody answering back at him.”

The tapes were recorded decades ago for the author, Andrew Morton, who used the audio to write Diana: Her True Story — In Her Own Words. The above extract from the tapes, along with other never-before-heard details about Diana's life as a member of the royal family, will be featured in a documentary on the late princess, which will be released next year. Diana testified for Morton for roughly seven hours while still married to then-Prince Charles, and much of the tapes were kept confidential until 2017 when the documentary, Diana: In Her Own Words premiered.

Princess Diana also disclosed her troubled relationship with her stepmother, Raine Spencer. Diana’s parents separated when she was just seven years old. Her father, Edward John Spencer, 8th Earl Spencer, married Raine in 1976. In the now-released tapes, Diana said:
“I was so angry. I told her, ‘I hate you so much. If only you knew how much we all hated you for what you've done. You've ruined the house, you've spent Daddy's money.’ I said everything I possibly could, and Raine said, ‘You have no idea how much pain mother put your father through.’”
When Princess Diana’s stepmother, Raine, talked about pain, Diana angrily said that she did not know what pain was. She mentioned that in her royal job role, she saw so much suffering and pain that Raine Spencer could not even imagine what real pain exactly is. Diana further added that her stepmother has much to learn from the people suffering. She said:
“I said, ‘Pain, Raine? That's one word you don't know how to relate to. In my job and in my role, I see people suffer like you've never seen. And you call that pain?’ I said, ‘You've got a lot to learn.’"
Princess Diana married the now-king, Charles III on July 29, 1981. The royal wedding was nothing short of a fairytale, but as it is said, appearances can be very deceptive. She had a tumultuous marital life with Charles, which eventually ended in a divorce in 1992. Princess Diana is loved to date for her humanitarian efforts, especially when she decided to break the stigma and fear surrounding AIDS. The recent release of the tapes can have a devastating impact on King Charles, as it was released just a week before the first anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's death.
