Salman Khan is one of the most popular actors in Bollywood. Through his stellar performances in Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan, Tiger Zinda Hai, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Dabangg 2, and Bodyguard, Salman has built a huge fan base. However, back in 2002, the Dabangg actor had made headlines for a controversial hit-and-run case. In a recent interview, director cum actor, Puneet revealed Salman’s mental state during that tough phase and how his father, Salim Khan guided him all through the way.
Actor and director, Puneet Issar, recently sat for an interview with Siddharth Kannan and shared insights from Salman Khan’s tough times back in 2002 when he found himself at the centre of a legal battle. For the unversed, the 2002 hit-and-run case involved the Bodyguard actor who allegedly drove his Toyota Land Cruiser over five people sleeping on the pavement in Mumbai’s Bandra area, resulting in one death and injuries to four others. The incident sparked a nationwide debate, and the actor faced immense public scrutiny as a result. Recalling the tough times Salman went through, Puneet said that the actor was quite 'disturbed'.
In the same interview, Puneet shared that after the tragic incident, Salman’s family members had decided that the actor must concentrate on his work. Puneet specifically mentioned Salman’s father, Salim Khan, and revealed how he had told him to advise Salman to stay busy with his work. For the uninitiated, Salman was the lead actor of the film, Garv: Pride and Honour, directed by Puneet. In his words:
"Salim sahab maintained that during that phase of Salman’s life, he should just work. Salim sahab told me to tell Salman to stay busy at work, and this was a collective decision taken by his family. It was the right decision and that’s what he did."
Further in the interview, Puneet talked about Salman’s resilience on the sets of Garv: Pride and Honour. For those unaware, when Salman Khan was shooting for Puneet’s film, Garv: Pride and Honour, he was going through a tough phase due to the legal tussle related to the 2002 hit-and-run case. But despite the immense backlash and media glares, the actor stood strong and focused on his work. Recalling the shooting days, Puneet said:
"His morale was very good on set. He is a professional. He has a comfort zone, he works in that, he would come, work out and shoot."
Earlier in 2015, Salman appeared on the show, Aap Ki Adalat and talked about the controversial 2002 hit-and-run case involving him. He shared that he was present in the car when the tragic accident happened and stated that his driver was driving the car. He also expressed that each time he crosses the area, he feels hurt. Aur main us gaadi mein maujood tha. Aapko andaza hi nahi laga sakte ki jab main jaata hun wahaan se to every time it just hurts me here. It is the worst thing that can ever happen. Bechare masoom so rahe the, hamare driver gaadi chala rahe the, main aur kamaal peeche baithe the. Humara jo ki police ka security tha woh samne baitha tha."
