Raakaasa was one of the most anticipated Telegu film of April 2026. For the unversed, the movie hit theatres on Friday, April 3, 2026. With the release of Raakaasa, it has joined the list of fantasy films which are having an outstanding run in Tollywood these days. The film also marks the directorial debut of Manasa Sharma. If you haven't already watched the movie and are wondering if Raakaasa is worth watching in the theatres, here's our review of the film to help you decide.
The story of the film, Raakaasa, revolves around a mysterious fort and a demon living within it. Interestingly, the demon in question has laid a condition for the villagers that if they refuse to obey his commands, he won't spare their village. Because of this one condition, the villagers have followed his orders for thousands of years. However, everything turns on its head when a young US returnee arrives in the village and challenges this rule, although unknowingly.

This man is none other than our protagonist, 'Veerababu,' better known as 'Veeru' (Sangeeth Sobhan). The reason he comes to the village is to marry his love. Although his timing isn't the best, as her marriage is already being arranged with someone else. 'Veeru' takes the help of his friend, 'Balu' (Getup Srinu), to stop the wedding, but to no avail. Following this, 'Veeru' reconnects with his school friend, 'Subbalakshmi,' and the duo slowly starts to fall in love with each other.

On the other hand, the villagers soon take note of three signs which mean that the demon living in their village wants a human sacrifice. If they fail to procure the sacrifice in time, it could lead to their village's destruction. While it is a phenomenon that happens only once in a few hundred years, 'Veeru' accidentally enters the demon's fort ahead of the sacrifice. In the film, viewers will see the fate of 'Veeru' and exactly who the demon is.

Raakaasa begins in a rather interesting manner, with the villagers narrating the story of the fort and the demon. The first half of the film moves at a steady pace, especially where ‘Veeru’ tries to stop his former lover's wedding with ‘Balu’s’ help. There are also a few entertaining moments as the first half unravels.

Now, it is the second half of the film that really leaves viewers on the edge of their seats. If you haven't already guessed, it is in the second half of Raakaasa that the villagers receive the three songs and ‘Veeru’ accidentally steps inside the fort. Here, the audience is transported into a full-fledged fantasy adventure as they get to see the imaginative world inside the fort. With Sangeeth Sobhan and Vennela Kishore featured in most scenes, viewers will enjoy many entertaining, comic moments. When it comes to the fantasy props within the fort, all of them look well-made. The added visual effects on top of it are also pretty competent.

It is worth noting that Raakaasa is not a hardcore horror film. Instead, as we have already mentioned, it is more of a fantasy film packed with both humour and a few thrilling moments. It is definitely a movie that keeps viewers engaged, though the first half might seem a little flat compared to the second. Coming to the music in Raakaasa, it is average. Cinematography is one of the film's major highlights. The film offers a strong climax and an unexpected twist, which viewers will enjoy. For those unaware, since director, Manasa Sharma has acknowledged filmmaker, Vittalacharya as her inspiration, his influence can be picked up in her storytelling and presentation style.
Overall, if you are someone who enjoys fantasy movies, you could definitely give watching Raakaasa a try.
