Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders is streaming on Netflix and is getting a lot of attention for its gripping storyline. The plot revolves around the mass murder of one of the most influential families of Uttar Pradesh. The film stars Chitrangada Singh, Rajat Kapoor, Revathi, Priyanka Setia, Deepti Naval, Aarushi Bajaj, Rahaao, Radhika Apte, and a few others.
The film starts with multiple murders of the Bansal family members in a single night, and their remains are discovered in different rooms of the house. Soon, the Bansals’ family home turns into a chamber of suspicion, with every member suspected of having carried out the mass murder. The investigation is handed to ‘Inspector Jatil Yadav’, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Though the story attempts to give simpler answers, it only distracts the audience.

'Jatil Yadav' realises that the mystery is far more complicated than it seems. According to him, the murders are carried out in a manner to cover up a past tragedy. What looks like a family feud soon turns into a story of systemic corruption and religious manipulation. The more Jatil delves into the case, the more suspicious he becomes as every member of the household seems to be hiding something.

There are many potential suspects in the show. 'Aarav Bansal', the family’s problematic child, is the prime suspect as his history with substance abuse makes him an easy scapegoat. The focus then shifts to ‘Guru Maa’, a character played by actress, Deepti Naval. She is a strong spiritual figure in the series, associated with the Bansals' private lives.

The reason for her to be the prime suspect also stems from the fact that food from her ashram was consumed by the Bansals on the night of the killings, and some of the food was found to be drugged. However, as the plot unfolds, it looks like both 'Aarav' and 'Guru Maa' were mere distractions.

The truth is finally revealed when ‘Jatil Yadav’ connects the dots and reveals the killer to be 'Om Prakash', one of the night guards of the family. While 'Om Prakash' was overlooked throughout the narrative but he was the one who planned and executed the murders. His motive behind the murder was revenge. 'Om Prakash' lost his daughter in the tragic gas leak from the chemical factory owned by 'Meera Bansal'.

Like the many who lost their dear ones, 'Om Prakash' was also one of them, who received no justice for his tragic loss. In a state of frustration and anger, he plans the calculated move towards the Bansals by using poison in the family’s food and then making 'Aarav' the scapegoat by using him to confuse the entire narrative.
Om Prakash’s act was an outcome of the revenge he carried in his heart for the Bansals. Despite Meera Bansal’s factory being the reason for the death of so many children, there was no legal action taken against her. A plot in the film shows how threats, settlements, and bureaucratic intimidation were used to silence the families of the victims, without any justice. The truth behind the murders came out, but justice was not served. The film highlights how money and power can curb morality.
