There is no denying the fact that Rahul Roy is hailed as the 'Aashiqui boy' by all the 90s people. His performance in the film, Aashiqui, was praise-worthy, and no amount of words is sufficient to laud him for the same. However, once during an event in 2012, Rahul Roy was asked about the then-upcoming film, Aashiqui 2, by the media. To which, the actor had said that he didn't think that the remake would be as good as the original. In his words:
"Honestly, if you look at any remake, Hollywood or Bollywood, whenever you have tried to remake it (a film), ask yourself has it been as good as the original."

Rahul's remark on Aashiqui 2 didn't go well with many people, who got upset with the actor. Even Mahesh Bhatt, who had directed the original and backed the 2013 remake as a producer, had called Rahul 'delusional'. However, in a 2013 interview with Rediff, Rahul reacted to Mahesh's remark that the former wanted Aashiqui to end with him and said that he didn't understand why people get hurt by his opinions. Calling himself the OG 'Aashiqui boy', Rahul said:
"I am saying it myself that Aashiqui should not end with me. I don't hold the rights to the film. Mahesh Bhatt introduced me to the world of films. Till today, people remember Rahul Roy as the Aashiqui boy. I don't understand why they have to get hurt by my opinions. If a Rahul Roy is saying that Aashiqui 2 will not perhaps live up to the expectations of Aashiqui, it should not upset Vishesh Films (production banner) if they have so much faith in their film. It was they who taught me to be realistic and accept the truth. When I am giving the truth of what my film was, why is it affecting them?"
Like many Bollywood stars, Rahul Roy also started his career as a model, but the movie, Aashiqui, gave him an enviable break in the film industry. After the huge success of Aashiqui, Roy was reportedly offered nearly 18 movies, but he turned most of them down as he did not want to overwork himself. However, the movies that he did later did not perform well at the box office, so he took a sabbatical from acting for almost seven years after 1999.
