Actor turned politician, Raj Babbar had begun his acting career in 1977 with the film, Kissa Kursi Ka. An alumnus of NSD, Raj Babbar had stunned everyone with his acting prowess in Insaaf Ka Taraazu, where he played the role of an antagonist. His performances in Nikaah opposite Salma Agha and Aaj Ki Awaz with Smita Patil were highly appreciated.
Raj Babbar got married to Nadira Zaheer in 1975, with whom he has two children, Juhi Babbar and Arya Babbar. It was on the sets of Bheegi Palkein, when Raj had met the stunning, Smita Patil for the first time. Raj, who was completely awestruck by the dusky beauty couldn’t stop himself from falling in love with her. Defying all the societal norms, Raj got married to Smita.

In 1986, Smita Patil had passed away due to childbirth complications. And at this point of time, Raj found solace in actress, Rekha. It was reported that the two were head-over-heels in love with one another but had broken up later. Although Rekha has never admitted the same, Raj had talked about his affair with Rekha in an interview.
In a throwback interview, reported by IBTimes, Raj had said, “Yes, our relationship helped me in a way. We drifted together because of certain circumstances. At that time, Rekha had broken off from a long-standing relationship.”

Raj had further said that although their affair wasn’t intense but they definitely were not ‘just friends’. Talking about the same, Raj had stated, “I was not as involved with Rekha as I was with Smita. The intensity wasn't there. At the same time I cannot say that we were friends.” Raj had also shared that his relationship with Rekha had given him a new life.

December 13, 2020, marked Smita Patil’s 34th death anniversary and her husband, Raj Babbar had shared a heartmelting post for her. Raj had taken to his IG handle and had shared a beautiful picture of her and had written, “You were just 31 when you left us. The short pathway of memories you walked, left so many indelible impressions that your absence isn't easy to believe. You saw so little & yet had so much to showcase. Your hasty retreat from our lives would always remain unexplained.”
In an interview with The Times Of India, Raj Babbar had talked about Smita’s death and how it had shattered him. Talking about the same, he was quoted as, “Smita left me forever. I was traumatised by her death. But I didn’t want my problems to affect the lives of those who counted on me. I sought refuge in my work, but the wounds took time to heal.”
