The shocking case of Pune-based businessman, Raja Raghuvanshi, has kept the nation on its toes as more twisted and unsettling revelations come up. The infamous Meghalaya honeymoon murder case has taken another spine-chilling turn, as police now reveal that the killers not only planned out Raja’s cold-blooded murder but also considered killing an unknown woman to fake the death of Raja’s wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, for a perfect cover-up. And the mastermind behind all this was allegedly not the prime accused, Sonam, as was initially thought.
Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raj Kushwaha, and the three hired killers are currently under police custody. As per the latest reports made by Meghalaya Police, contrary to prior speculations, it was Raj Kushwaha, Sonam’s suspected boyfriend, who was the mastermind behind the murder, while Sonam was the co-conspirator.
According to Meghalaya police, the plan to kill Raja was laid out days before his wedding with Sonam on May 11, 2025. As per East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem, Raj’s three accomplices helped him out of friendship and loyalty rather than for financial gain. Raj merely gave them Rs. 50,000 to cover logistics. Syiem was quoted by PTI as:
"The conspiracy to eliminate Raja was hatched in Indore, shortly before his wedding with Sonam on May 11, and the mastermind is Raj, while the woman had agreed to the plot… The three young people were friends, and one of them is a cousin of Raj. It was not a typical contract killing. Yes, the plan was to kill, and they did it as a favour to their friend Raj.”
During interrogation, the alleged mastermind, Raj, confessed that they devised not one, but two schemes surrounding the honeymoon murder. After pushing Raja’s body off a cliff, they planned to stage a fake drowning to make it appear that Sonam was washed away in a river after Raja’s killing. Another plan was to kill any random woman and burn her body to pass it off as Sonam’s corpse, but neither plan was executed. The police were quoted as saying:
"One plan was to make people believe that she would wash away by a river. Another plan was to murder any woman, burn the body and claim that it was of Sonam. However, none of the plans fructify."
The hired killers succeeded in killing Raja during his honeymoon with Sonam on May 23, 2025, and dumped his body in a 200-feet gorge near Weisawdong Falls, Meghalaya. However, recent investigations revealed that the group attempted to murder Raja three times before they succeeded. On the fourth attempt, Raja was lured under the pretext of a photo op before being hacked to death with a machete.

Sonam watched the murder unfold, ensuring that it was successful. Post-murder, she assisted the killers in covering up the bloodstains and hiding the evidence, including a raincoat. She then fled Meghalaya in a burqa and travelled through Guwahati, Siliguri, Patna, Lucknow, and finally Indore.
However, when the other members of the group were arrested, Raj allegedly panicked and suggested that Sonam surrender in UP’s Ghazipur, posing as a kidnap victim. This was their last attempt at misguiding the investigators. The PTI quoted the police as:
“Raj had given Vishal a burqa, which he had handed over to Sonam. She wore it, went to the Police Bazaar and took a taxi to Guwahati. From Guwahati, she reached Siliguri on a bus. From there, she took buses to go to Patna and Arah and boarded a train for Lucknow. From Lucknow, Sonam took a bus and reached Indore…When the first arrest (Akash) was made in UP, Raj panicked and told Sonam to call up her family and tell them she had just escaped from an abduction gang. That's how this whole thing came to light in Ghazipur.”
