Rajesh Khanna was considered Bollywood’s first superstar, and he soon became a heartthrob across generations for his stellar acting and on-screen charm. In 2012, when the actor passed away at the age of 69, he left millions in mourning. However, his final year was far from the pomp and glory showcased in reel life. It was a difficult phase that took a toll on the actor’s mental and physical health. Rajesh Khanna’s alleged lady love, Anita Advani opened up about the actor’s emotional turmoil in his final year.

Anita Advani and Rajesh Khanna have allegedly lived together out of wedlock since 2004, and the former stayed by the actor’s side till the day he breathed his last. In a recent interview with Avanti Films, Anita shared some heartbreaking details about Rajesh Khanna’s deteriorating health in his final year, describing how he ‘melted away’, both physically and emotionally. Talking about the actor’s last days, Anita revealed:

“He would cry all day long. It was almost like he was manifesting his own death. He invited it, manifested it."

During the conversation, Anita also revealed Rajesh Khanna’s deep attachment to his iconic bungalow, Aashirvaad, and his vision of converting it into a museum. Despite receiving an offer of Rs. 150 crore for the property, he refused to sell it. The actor was already sick at that time but he did not want to sell his house to one day have his dream come true. Unfortunately, the dream could not be fulfilled as the bungalow was demolished after Rajesh Khanna’s demise. Anita shared:

“He had an offer of Rs. 150 crore for the house when he was unwell, but he refused. He said, ‘I want to turn this into a museum that will stand for 100 years’... When the house was demolished, I died along with it.”

Rajesh Khanna’s bond with Dimple Kapadia and kids rekindled in his final days

Despite his health challenges in his final years, the silver lining was that the actor’s estranged wife, Dimple Kapadia, and daughters, Twinkle and Rinke, started visiting him more frequently in his last year. Talking about the same, Anita shared:

“They would spend a couple of hours with him. If I was out, they’d call to check when I’d return so they could leave. I was happy they had come back into his life."

Anita also revealed that Rajesh Khanna had started hallucinating during his final days, and he had grown so weak that he often struggled to comprehend things. Doctors had warned that Rajesh’s health was in rapid decline. She also mentioned that actress, Anju Mahendroo, the actor’s former girlfriend, would occasionally visit him, and they shared a cordial bond during that time.
