South Indian superstar, Rajinikanth is known for his trademark style in dozens of films with a cigarette in his mouth. However, since his film, Chandramukhi, in 2005, he decided not to encourage smoking on-screen. But in a 2019 film, Petta, he was seen sharing a cigarette with Vijay Sethupathi in a scene. But he was also heard sharing that smoking isn't good for health and was talking about the same from his personal experience. Indeed, the veteran actor follows the same in his personal life now.But from where did such a change come in him? In a recent media interaction, he revealed it was his wife, Latha who could possibly bring the change in him.
During a media interaction at an event hosted by his brother-in-law, actor-playwright, YG Mahendra, Rajinikanth was asked to say something about his sale sahab. To this, Rajinikanth revealed that he is extremely grateful for YG Mahendra because it was only because of him that he could meet his wife, Latha. Further, sharing stories of his struggles with smoking and drinking, Rajinikanth mentioned that when he was a bus conductor, he used to feed on mutton, alcohol and cigarettes daily. Afterwards, his bad habits were fuelled when he joined the film industry. He said:
“What do I tell about YG Mahendra? He was the one who introduced me to Latha and got me married to her. I am 73 years old now, and the reason for my health is my wife. When I was a bus conductor, due to the friendship of some wrong guys, I had many bad habits. I used to eat mutton twice a day. I used to drink daily, and I don’t know how many cigarettes I smoked. After coming to the cinema, with money and fame, imagine how much these would have increased.”

Further, in the same conversation, Rajinikanth mentioned that for quite some time, he used to follow the deadliest diet plan daily. Not only that, the humble actor also revealed his previous opinion about vegetarians. However, it was Latha's love for him that changed him, along with the right medical treatment. Talking about the same, Rajinikanth shared:
“Daily morning I wanted to eat mutton paya, appam, and chicken. I used to look down upon vegetarians. I used to wonder what they actually ate. Honestly, cigarettes, alcohol, and meat are a dangerous combination. Those who do all this without a limit, have not lived healthily even till 60. Many have faced so many health issues before they turned 60. There are many examples. Let’s not mention them. She (Latha) was the one who changed me with her love. With love and the right doctors, she changed me. Thanks to YG Mahendra for that.”
On February 26, 2021, Rajinikanth and his wife, Latha completed 40 years of togetherness. Their doting daughter, Aishwaryaa had posted an extremely emotional wish for them to mark their special day. Taking to her Instagram handle, Aishwaryaa shared a beautiful sketch, which featured her nana-nani on the left-hand side and her dada-dadi on the right. In the middle, we could spot Rajinikanth and his ladylove, Latha holding each other's hand while decked up in their wedding attires.
