Rana Daggubati On Using Abusive Words At His 'Mama' Venkatesh In 'Rana Naidu', 'It Was Worse When..'

Telugu actor and filmmaker, Rana Daggubati’s Hindi-language action crime drama, Rana Naidu Season 2, is set to be released on Netflix on June 13, 2025. The series, starring Rana and his uncle, veteran star Venkatesh Daggubati, in key roles, explores a complex father-son dynamic which largely deviates from traditional family drama that the Telugu audiences are more accustomed to, as it includes bold scenes and abusive words exchanged between the real-life uncle-nephew duo.

Ahead of Season 2, Rana opened up about the awkward yet amusing experience of hurling curse words at his real-life mama on screen, and how it became even more embarrassing when he saw the Telugu version of the series. In a recent interaction with SCREEN, Rana revealed that while shooting the Hindi version of the show, he didn’t fully grasp the impact of the curse words he was hurling. He shared:

“Since it was Hindi, I didn’t understand much of what I said in Part 1. So I thought it was okay. It was worse when I was dubbing it in Telugu. It was like, ‘Shit! What did I say!’ There’s a very definite attire and thought gone into how they look and think. Till they’re in those clothes, we’re all fine. We’re licensed to do anything.”

Rana also admitted that his experience of working with his legendary uncle as a co-star felt surreal and a dream-come-true moment for him. However, he had never expected his first project with Venkatesh to be something wild like Rana Naidu with extreme characters. Reflecting on his experience working with such a phenomenal actor, Rana said:

“From the time I made it as an actor, I always thought I’d work with him at some point of time. I was really looking forward to what that project would be. Rana Naidu is something unique that came our way. It’s not something he or I have done before. These characters can just go on because they started from such opposite ends that you can travel with them across multiple seasons. As a co-actor, he’s pretty phenomenal and challenges us to be better each time.”

Rana Daggubati says Rana Naidu is his darkest version

Reflecting on his experience, Rana admitted he often got confused on set, unsure if his uncle was addressing him as a nephew or speaking to his character, blurring the lines between real life and reel life during intense scenes. When asked whether he found any similarity between his own character and his on-screen avatar, Rana remarked:

"Rana Naidu is the darkest version of Rana Daggubati that you can find, with all the issues at their peak. What was weird for me was that at the beginning, since my character is called Rana, every time Venky was saying, ‘Rana! Rana!’ I didn’t know if it was my uncle shouting at me or the character. That was pretty messed up."
