Ranbir Kapoor Recalls How Rishi Kapoor Put Him On Budget During His College Days, 'It Was Enough...'

Ranbir Kapoor is one of the most prominent names in the Hindi film industry. He started his career in showbiz as an assistant director to Sanjay Leela Bhansali while he was filming Black, and then he debuted as an actor with SLB's Saawariya. Recently, the 41-year-old actor sat for an interview on Nikhil Kamath's podcast, People by WTF, and spoke at length about his professional front.

Ranbir Kapoor reminisces about his college days and how Rishi Kapoor had put him on a tight budget

While talking with the host, Ranbir reminisced about his college days in Mumbai and New York City. After completing his education in India, the actor enrolled at the School of Visual Arts in New York. But after he returned, Ranbir's father, Rishi Kapoor, believed that he was too young to make his acting debut and sent him back to NYC. He had joined the prestigious Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute to learn method acting.

In the same conversation, he recalled how the late Rishi Kapoor would keep him tight on budget to teach him the value of money despite belonging to a well-to-do family. The actor shared that his father's actions made a huge impact on him. Sharing that he used to have McDonald's dollar menu meal, Ranbir said:

"My father had kept me on a very tight budget. Of course, when I say tight budget, I am still coming from a privileged background, but it was enough to have a McDonald’s dollar menu meal for lunch and dinner. So, it was like USD 2 for lunch and USD 2 for dinner. It was as strict as that, even though I come from a privileged background."

Ranbir Kapoor says his father wanted him to live like a student

The host further inquired why was the actor subjected to such treatment by his father. To this, Ranbir emphasised that Rishi Kapoor wanted his son to be mindful of spending money and added that his father wanted him to live like a student and not like a superstar's son. In his words:

"He never addressed this, but I think he wanted me to live like a student and not a superstar’s son. Maybe it was to teach the value of money."

Ranbir Kapoor reveals he used to travel using public transport

Meanwhile, Ranbir also revealed that after he came back to Mumbai, he still used to lead his life frugally. He mentioned that his father wouldn't give him any pocket money, and he would travel by public transport while he was assisting Sanjay Leela Bhansali in Black, which was released in 2005 starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji. He said:

"My father wanted to school me that this is not life, you are too moisturised, you need to see what hardship is."
