The 58-year-old actor had suffered a major heart attack and was rushed to Inlaks Hospital, where he was declared 'brought dead'. It was Rishi Kapoor’s wife, Neetu Kapoor, who had informed about the untimely demise of Rajiv Kapoor. Sharing a picture of him, Neetu had written, "RIP". And now, late Rajiv Kapoor's siblings, Randhir Kapoor and Rima Jain have filed for a testamentary petition to seek letters of administration to Rajiv’s property.
On April 26, 2021, the Bombay High court sought an undertaking from Randhir Kapoor and Rima Jain to submit the divorce decree of their late brother, Rajiv Kapoor. The siblings, Randhir and Rima had submitted a testamentary petition, which stated that Rajiv had married Aarti Sabharwal in 2001 and they had gotten divorce in 2003. When the court asked Randhir and Rima to submit Rajiv’s divorce decree, their lawyer, Sharan Jagtiani sought a dispensation to submit the divorce decree.
Jagtiani stated that Randhir and Rima neither have a copy of the divorce nor do they know which family court had passed it. He said, “The sister and brother are the only heirs to his estate. We don’t have access to the decree of the divorce. We tried to look for it but were not able to locate it. We seek dispensation. It was an acrimonious divorce.”

It was Randhir Kapoor, who had confirmed the news of Rajiv’s untimely death. In an interview with ETimes, Randhir Kapoor had talked about the pain of losing his three siblings. The actor had shared that his brother, Rajiv had no prior medical condition. Randhir had said, "I am left alone in this house. Rajiv was a very gentle and extremely jovial person. It is so tough to believe that he is gone. He had no medical history. His health was simply fine; he had no problems whatsoever. I don't know what's happening. I was equally close to Rishi and Rajiv. I have lost four people from my family--my mother Krishna Kapoor (October 2018), eldest sister Ritu (January 14, 2020), Rishi and now Rajiv. These four were my central core, with whom I did most of my talking."
In the 1980s, Rajiv Kapoor had decided to carry his father’s legacy and had ventured into acting. His early films didn’t do much well and he was cast as the lead in the 1985 social drama film, Ram Teri Ganga Maili. Although the film was a blockbuster but couldn’t do much to take off Rajiv’s acting career. But it didn’t deter his spirit and he had gone on to direct Madhuri Dixit starrer Prem Granth, which had failed miserably at the box office.
