One of the first families of the Hindi film industry, The Kapoors, have given some of the most iconic actors to Hindi cinema. Be it Prithviraj Kapoor or the current generation’s heartthrob, Ranbir Kapoor, many iconic actors from the family paved a path of great legacy to follow. Though all the Kapoor lads thrived their way to stardom, some faced rejections soon after success.
One of them is Randhir Kapoor, who had the potential to be as successful as his younger brother, Rishi Kapoor, but unfortunately faced the other side of stardom. Randhir Kapoor worked in a series of hit films like Haath Ki Safai (1974), Chacha Bhatija (1977), Rampur Ka Lakshman(1972), Jawani Diwani (1972), Kal Aaj Aur Kal (1971), Hamrahi (1974), Ram Bharose (1977), Mama Bhanja (1977), Biwi-o-Biwi (1981), and the list goes on. Let us read on to know what went wrong in Randhir Kapoor’s life.
While some of the initial films of Randhir Kapoor worked well with the audience, people liked his romantic roles. However, after a point of time, he stopped experimenting with his roles and only focussed on similar roles. People got bored seeing him portraying the same foodie guy with a snappy sense of humour. After giving flops in films like Rickshawala, Dharam Karam, Sawaal, Pukar and Khazana, he quit acting and ventured into direction and production.
Randhir Kapoor’s heavy drinking habit was the reason for his career’s downfall. Randhir’s initial success made him careless, and he took his stardom for granted. Instead of focusing on his career, he began drinking, and soon, it started affecting his health. Once, in an interview with the Hindustan Times, Randhir admitted that he was a terrible man and used to drink a lot. He said:
"She found that I was a terrible man who drank a lot and came home late, which was something she didn't like. And I didn't want to live the way she wanted, and she couldn't accept me as I am, though it was a love marriage. So it's okay."
Babita met Randhir Kapoor on the set of the film, Sangam, where he came along with his father, Raj Kapoor, and she was also present there. Randhir fell head-over-heels in love with the doe-eyed beauty. After a few years of courtship, the duo got married in 1971 at the Kapoor residence. The couple welcomed two beautiful daughters, Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor.

Troubles in Ranbir and Babita’s married life started in the 1980s when Randhir’s career started to see a downfall, and none of his films was working. After the birth of their second child, Kareena Kapoor, in 1981, financial woes started to take a toll on Randhir and Babita’s relationship. By the mid-1980s, Randhir Kapoor was stamped as a ‘flop hero’. By that time, he had become an alcoholic and stopped taking his acting career seriously. Finally, in 1987, Babita decided to separate from him, and she single-handedly raised her two daughters, Karisma and Kareena.
Randhir and Babita lived in separate homes for many years, even though they were still legally married. Eventually, in 2007, after 19 years of separation, they buried their differences and reunited.
