Rani Mukerji has been part of Bollywood for the past 30 years. She began her film journey with Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, in which she played a fierce young woman. Rani Mukerji also starred in hit films, but it was during her initial films that she received a big blow after Aamir Khan told her that the makers would dub her voice in Ghulam. Recently, Rani talked about the emotional moment and how Karan Johar helped her retain her voice.
As Rani Mukerji gears up for the release of Mardaani 3, she is busy with a promotional spree. Recently, at an event with Karan Johar, Rani Mukerji discussed her 30-year journey. She recalled that when she was shooting for Ghulam, Aamir Khan told her that her voice wasn't appropriate for the character or the film, so someone else would dub it. While the decision was upsetting for her, Rani couldn't show it, as it was for the film. She said:
"I could not show the fact that I was upset because you need to be a team player when you are part of the film… Even if there are personal disappointments it does not matter if the intent is true for the film."

A visibly upset and emotional Rani Mukerji gave credit to Karan Johar, and shared that she owes it to him. She added that when they were shooting for the trailer of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, he came to her and asked whether she had dubbed her voice in her first film and if she had a problem with it, and she said no. Karan then told her that he loved her voice. She was quoted as saying:
"I really owe this to Karan, when we were shooting for the trailer of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai… I remember you asked me whether I had dubbed my voice in my first film and if I had a problem with it and I said no, I did dub my voice. You said, ‘I love your voice!’ and I still remember it. Thanks to you Karan that I could retain my voice."

For those who don't know, in the 1998 film Ghulam, Rani Mukerji's voice was dubbed by Mona Ghosh, and the film was directed by Vikram Bhatt. So, Karan Johar helped Rani to make her voice look perfect and helped her retain it for future films. It is her voice that sets her apart, as the film was a super-duper hit and made it big at the box office.

Rani Mukerji will soon be back on the silver screen with her film, Mardaani 3. In the earlier two films, Rani plays the role of 'Senior Inspector Shivani Shivaji Roy'. The film is produced by Aditya Chopra under the Yash Raj Films banner. The film will hit the theatres on January 30, 2026. The film's trailer was released and fans loved Rani's role in it in the 16-second video.
