Rani Mukerji and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are two of the most talented actresses in the Hindi film industry, who, over the years, have proved their mettle with their masterclass acting prowess. While Rani began her career in 1996, Aishwarya stepped into the acting world a year later. Despite being contemporary, Rani and Aishwarya used to share a great bond, so much so, that they were even tagged as 'best friends'. Over the years, their equation changed, and Rani even was not invited to Aishwarya's wedding with Abhishek Bachchan.
There was a time when Rani Mukerji had promised Aishwarya Rai to be 'friends forever' with her. Aishwarya once arrived at a show, Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai, wherein Rani was seemingly also invited, but she couldn't attend the same being unwell. Rani's cute video message for Aishwarya was played on the show, as she promised to be her friend forever.
In the video message, Rani said that she loves Aishwarya, and she just wanted to say that she couldn't arrive on the show being unwell. She also added that Aishwarya means a lot to her, and although she wouldn't have to say this to Aish, she wanted to say this to everybody on TV. Later, Rani also promised Aishwarya to be friends with her forever. Rani, in the video message, could be heard saying:
"You know I love you. I'm so sorry I couldn't come for the show because you know I'm unwell. As you know, I'm always unwell and couldn't make it to Delhi. But just to let you know that I love you and you mean a lot to me. I just love you Aish. I don't think I need to say it. But because of everyone I have to say it on TV again. I just want to say one thing that we are going to be friends forever."
Rani Mukerji replaced Aishwarya Rai in the movie, Chalte Chalte. Reportedly, Aishwarya's then-beau, Salman Khan, once came on the set and made a huge scene, due to which, one of the movie's producers, Shah Rukh Khan decided to sack Aishwarya from the movie and replace her with Rani. Reports were rife that Aishwarya was hurt by the same, and since then, a cold war has been going on between her and Rani.
When Rani appeared on Koffee With Karan, the host asked Rani about her changed equation with Aishwarya. To this, she stated that everybody is familiar with the incident. Well, Karan said he knew nothing, but subtly teased Rani by saying, "Chalte Chalte mujhe bataa do kya hua tha", leaving the actress and Kareena laughing out loud.

Rani Mukerji and Abhishek Bachchan's dating buzz also caught up the headlines back in those times. Well, they never accepted the same, which, in a way, cleared the fact that the buzz was only false. But Rani's great bond with the Bachchan clan would often ignite the buzz. It was when Abhishek's engagement with Aishwarya was announced, then the gossip about Rani and the actor stopped. Rani, who once considered both Abhishek and Aishwarya friends, was not invited to their wedding. She once talked about the same and mentioned that while she used to think of those people as friends, their not inviting her proved that their acquaintance remained limited to co-stars. Talking to Cosmopolitan, Rani said:
"Only Abhishek can throw light on that. The truth is that if a person chooses not to invite you to their wedding, you realise where you stand with the person. You may be deluded and think you are friends but maybe the friendship was only restricted to being co-stars on the sets. It doesn’t matter. It became very clear and evident that we were only co-actors and not friends. Poor guy has been married for many years, we should all move on. I will always have fond memories of working with him.”
