DC Cancels 'Red Hood' After Writer Celebrates Charlie Kirk Shooting, CC Pulls 'South Park' Episode

The shock following the brutal assassination of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk is now rocking the worlds of television and comic books. Just a day after the 31-year-old MAGA loyalist was shot dead during an interactive event with students at the Utah Valley University campus, DC Comics has cancelled a major title, as Comedy Central has quietly shelved the controversial South Park episode that mocked Kirk.

DC Comics axes Red Hood series after writer’s shocking remarks on Charlie Kirk’s shooting

A day after Charlie Kirk’s Utah shooting, DC Comics announced on Thursday, September 11, 2025, that it has now cancelled the new Red Hood series following its writer’s scathing remarks on the tragedy. After Kirk’s murder, Red Hood writer Gretchen Felker-Martin posted inflammatory comments celebrating the tragedy, sparking outrage on social media.

Shortly after Kirk’s assassination on September 10, 2025, Felker-Martin made not one but two posts mocking Kirk and celebrating the shooting incident. On Bluesky, the now-deactivated account wrote, “Hope the bullet’s okay after touching Charlie Kirk” and “Thoughts and prayers, you Nazi b–h.” The comments fuelled widespread backlash, and screenshots of the posts circulated online before Felker-Martin deactivated the account.

Given the sensitivity of the hour and Felker-Martin’s scathing remarks on the late politician, DC Comics decided to cancel Red Hood, stating that such posts are out of step with DC’s standards of conduct. A DC spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter:

“At DC Comics, we place the highest value on our creators and community and affirm the right to peaceful, individual expression of personal viewpoints. Posts or public comments that can be viewed as promoting hostility or violence are inconsistent with DC’s standards of conduct.”

Meanwhile, Bluesky has also come forward in response to multiple hateful posts mocking Charlie Kirk or glorifying violence after the conservative politician's murder. The site issued a stern warning to anyone posting content that violates its community guidelines, writing:

South Park episode mocking Charlie Kirk shelved after his murder

DC’s move comes around the same time that Comedy Central silently pulled its South Park episode mocking Charlie Kirk. The episode, which aired on August 6, 2025, weeks before the Utah horror, featured the character ‘Eric Cartman’ imitating Kirk as a conservative podcaster.

The controversial South Park episode, titled ‘Got a Nut’, mocked Kirk’s campus debates and Christian faith, portraying him as a ‘master debater’. Interestingly, Kirk himself had reacted to the parody, embracing the joke wholeheartedly, calling it a ‘badge of honour’. He even shared on X (formerly Twitter) that he was switching his profile photo to the image of ‘Mr. Cartman’ dressed in a black T-shirt parodying him.

However, following Charlie Kirk’s brutal assassination, furious MAGA supporters are now pointing fingers at the show, with some even suggesting its mockery may have fuelled hatred against the late right-wing politician. Netizens slammed South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, accusing them of ‘normalising violence against conservatives’.

Charlie Kirk’s political murder looms heavily over pop culture

On September 10, 2025, Charlie Kirk was in the middle of an interaction with students at Utah Valley University during the first stop of his ‘American Comeback Tour’ when he was fatally shot in the neck. Ironically, this was the same day that the first issue of DC’s Red Hood landed in comic shops.

Disturbing videos from the scene show Charlie clutching his neck in pain before collapsing as panicked students scatter everywhere. His death was later confirmed by US President Donald Trump. The FBI has classified Kirk’s death as a ‘political assassination’. The manhunt for the shooter is still on.

Calling his close ally, Kirk, a ‘martyr for truth and freedom’, Trump vowed to hold accountable not just the killer but also those spreading ‘political violence through media and culture’. And now, with DC shelving a comic and Comedy Central retreating from parody, Kirk’s death is blurring the line between politics and pop culture.

As the fallout grows, one question lingers: beyond accountability, are these decisions proof that Kirk’s death has ignited a new front in America's culture wars?
