Reid Wiseman And Carroll's Daughters Wanted Him As 'Stay-At-Home Dad' Before Artemis II Mission

NASA astronaut, Reid Wiseman is currently in focus as he touched down on Earth after the completion of a historic Artemis II mission on April 10, 2026 (ET). His four-person moon research crewmates consisted of Victor Glover (Pilot), Christina Koch (Mission Specialist), and Jeremy Hansen (Mission Specialist). Interestingly, Reid Wiseman's late wife, Carroll Taylor Wiseman, became a part of the mission when his crewmates named a lunar crater after her. As Carroll's name gets increasingly linked with the Artemis II, here's a look at his life as a single dad of two following her demise due to cancer.

Did Reid Wiseman's daughters want him to be a stay-at-home dad?

After Reid Wiseman's wife, Carroll Taylor Wiseman, died on May 17, 2020, the astronaut has been raising their daughters, Katherine and Ellie Wiseman, all by himself. The girls were both minors when their mother passed away, and they needed their father to be around the most. They are currently 20 and 17 as of April 2026. The period right after Carroll's death was difficult for both the kids and their dad, Reid, all the more because of the nature of his job. During an April 2026 interview with CBS, days before he went on the Artemis II mission, he shared that his daughters had initially wanted him to be a stay-at-home dad.

When Reid was asked whether his kids supported his job as a Commander on the Artemis II mission, he recalled receiving their affirmation. However, he also admitted that some of them wanted him to spend time with them at home, like a stay-at-home dad. Although Katherine and Ellie wished their father were around more, they were understanding of his demanding job. According to Reid, they knew that leading the Artemis II operation was a "unique opportunity" and they wholeheartedly supported their father as he lived his dream. His exact words were:

"They are supporting me hugely. They would rather I not go. They would rather I be a stay-at-home dad and hang out. But they also know that this is a unique opportunity, and the parents have to live their dreams just like the kids have to live their dreams."

As per Reid Wiseman, worrying about his daughters keeps him on his toes. However, he wouldn't complain as his family is his everything. Whenever things get tough, it is his daughters that he turns back to. After an intense day, returning home is what Reid considers the most precious thing. He was quoted by CBS as saying:

"It keeps me on my toes every single day. That's my family, you know. When everything else is gone around you, it's family that you come home to. And that's the most important thing in anybody's life, I think."

Previously, in an interview video shared by CNN, Reid's brother, Bill Wiseman also echoed similar sentiments. He mentioned Ellie and Katherine were not happy when Reid left to explore space three to four years ago. But now that they are older, they understand the gravity of their father's job and are extremely proud of what he does for humanity. They know that Reid Wiseman is exactly where he needs to be and are very supportive of him. Notably, they even sent him off for the Artemis II mission. Regarding the children's change of attitude towards their father's job, Bill Wiseman stated:

"I don't think it made the girls happy 3 years ago or even 4 years ago, but I think if we asked them today, they would say our dad's doing exactly what he needs to be doing."
