Rekha Bhardwaj is well-known for her soulful voice. The veteran singer has won many hearts through her iconic voice. Some of Rekha's popular songs include 'Kabira' from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, 'Phir Le Aya Dil' from Barfi and 'Aise Kyun' from the web series, Mismatched Season 2. But do you know once the Ghazal maestro, Jagjit Singh, told Rekha that she had no 'chamak' in her voice? Yes, you read that right. In a recent interview, Rekha herself revealed this unknown fact.
In a recent interview with News18, Rekha Bhardwaj recalled her musical journey and how a harsh comment from the late Ghazal singer, Jagjit Singh broke her heart. The veteran singer mentioned that Jagjit told her that there was an absence of a spark in her voice, which made her upset. Rekha also shared that she felt very small at that moment. Recalling the sad moment, Rekha said:
"I wasn’t upset in the usual sense. I was upset, very positively. It wasn’t about ego. It was more that, I felt so small in that moment — I had been troubling him for almost two years, and he was always encouraging, always kind. But maybe I hadn’t realised that I wasn’t doing enough riyaaz."
Further in the interview, Rekha mentioned that although the comment from Jagjit Singh broke her heart initially, it shaped her career in a big way. The veteran singer said that Jagjit’s comment pushed her a lot to work on her voice. For the unversed, Jagjit Singh and Rekha Bhardwaj sang together 'Teri Fariyad' from Tum Bin 2. Sharing how Jagjit’s comment was a wake-up call for her, Rekha said:
"It was like being struck with a Zen stick — a wake-up call. That comment from Jagjit ji was necessary. It showed me the vacuum I had in my practice. He never said anything negative but what he did say made me push myself more. Only someone who truly loves you will correct you."
Rekha was born on January 24, 1964, into a musical family in Delhi. At the mere age of 3, she started her singing training. She had four sisters and one brother. In her childhood, her father used to arrange small music sessions where she, along with her siblings, performed for the extended family and friends. Rekha always chose Hindustani classical pieces and ghazals to perform at those music sessions.
In 1991, she got married to Vishal Bhardwaj. It was a love marriage. The couple met in 1984, when the duo was studying at Delhi University. Rekha was a senior and doing her Music Honours, while Vishal was in Arts. The thing that clicked between the two was their love for music. Last year, in the World Music Day 24 concert, the couple was seen accompanying many eminent singers, but a particular portion featuring the duo went viral.
