Rekha is an evergreen icon of Hindi cinema, and even at the age of 70, she can give tough competition to any leading Bollywood actress. Though her career graph has been tremendous, her personal life was never a bed of roses. The actress has experienced many lows in her heart and has been vocal about her relationships, too.
But the one man whose name has been attached to her until now is Amitabh Bachchan. Yes, the Silsila of Amitabh and Rekha’s rumoured love story still garners a lot of attention. According to speculation, Rekha and Amitabh fell in love on the set of Do Anjaane when he was already married to Jaya Bachchan. However, she was always tagged as the other woman, but it never bothered her as she was hopelessly in love with him.
While Rekha had confessed her love for Amitabh, he has always maintained silence on the same, and even decades later, their relationship is still under media scrutiny. The much-talked-about relationship again garnered limelight when Rekha graced Kapil Sharma’s show, The Great Indian Kapil Show, on Netflix.
Dressed in a golden-coloured kanjeevaram saree with matching jewellery, Rekha looked like a vision as she appeared on the show. During one of the segments, she gave a slight hint about her one-sided love for Mr Amitabh Bachchan. While narrating a shaayari, she said:
“Ho sakta hai ke apko humse ishqnahi hai, ho sakta hain ahi, hai, na kabhi tha, nah ai aur na hi hoga…kyuki, you know obvious reasons. Story of my life…but, hum jo apke prati pyaar koot koot ke koot koot ke bhare hue hai apne dimaag me, rozaana ked daur se hum mar mar ke jee rahe hain, uska kya? Uska kuch to aadar kijiye, kuch to kadakr kijiye. Kuch to is bindaare mohabbat ka bharam rakhiyega, tub bhi to mujhko manne ke liye.”

In an explosive throwback interview with Filmfare in 1984, Rekha reacted to Amitabh Bachchan’s denial of their relationship. The actress mentioned that she understood his actions as a way of protecting his image and his concern for his family. In her words:

“Why should he have not done it? He did it to protect his image, to protect his family, to protect his children. I think it is beautiful, I don’t care what the public thinks of it. Why should the public know of my love for him or his love for me? I love him, he loves me – that’s it! I don’t care what anybody thinks.”
In the same interview, Rekha revealed that Mr Bachchan is old-fashioned and would not do anything to hurt the sentiments of his wife, Jaya Bachchan. Elaborating on the same, she said:
“If he’d reacted that way towards me in private, I would have been very disappointed. But has he ever done that? I ask you. So why should I care about what he’s said in public? I know people must be saying bechari Rekha, pagal hai us par, phir bhi dekho. Maybe I deserve that pity. Not that he has 10 rollicking affairs! Mr Bachchan is still old-fashioned. He doesn’t want to hurt anybody, so why hurt his wife?”
Once, in a throwback interview with Stardust, Rekha recalled an incident when she saw Jaya crying while watching the love scenes between Amitabh and Rekha in the film, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar. After a week of the trial show, Rekha was told by her friends in the industry that Amitabh would no longer work with her. When she asked Mr Bachchan about the same, he refused to comment.
Despite decades, Rekha never fails to profess her unrequited love for Mr Bachchan and her emotions for him speak a thousand words.
