Rex Heuermann has pleaded guilty in the Gilgo Beach killings. It was in July 2023, when Rex Heuermann, an architect from Long Island, New York, was arrested with charges of committing seven murders. He initially did not plead guilty and was held at the Riverhead Correctional Facility in Suffolk County. However, it was in April 2026 that he changed his plea to guilty of seven counts of murder.

The Gilgo Beach killings have become one of the much-talked-about cases for the last few years, so much so that a Netflix documentary was also made on the same, named Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer. The hearing for Rex Heuermann has been set for June 2026, and Rex is expected to receive a lifetime imprisonment without parole, three consecutive life sentences, and four sentences of 25 years to life.
Rex's ex-wife, Asa Ellerup, was present in the courtroom when he pleaded guilty to murdering 7 women and initially causing the death of an 8th woman. Outside the courtroom, Asa talked to the media and revealed that her thoughts were with the victims' families because their loss had been immeasurable. For the unversed, Rex has admitted to having murdered Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Megan Waterman, 22, Amber Costello, 27, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, Jessica Taylor, 20, Valerie Mack, 24, Sandra Costilla, 28 and Karen Vergata, 34. Amid the recent update in the horrowing case, let's know everything about the architect and his family.

Rex Heuermann completed his studies in Berner High School in Massapequa, N.Y., in 1981, and has a bachelor’s degree from the New York Institute of Technology. Rex has an architectural consulting business in New York City, and his office has been near the Empire State Building. He had a normal upbringing, and if the reports are to be believed, Rex was born to an aerospace engineer dad and grew up in Long Island.

Rex completed his studies and eventually founded his own firm, RH Consultants & Associates, in Manhattan. He got married to Asa Ellerup, and they became parents to two kids. If the reports are to be followed, despite Rex growing up in the same locality where he used to reside with his wife and kids, no one knew him that much, with some of the neighbours believing that he was living a 'double life'. The wedding of Rex and Asa took place in 1996, and it was stated in reports that when the initial murders were taking place in the Gilgo Beach killing case, Asa and her kids were staying far from the state.
During the time Rex was arrested, his wife, Asa, also grabbed attention as it was being stated that her DNA matched the evidence that was found on one of the victim's bodies. Well, later it was proved that it was not because she was involved in the murder, but rather it was due to the fact that she was in close proximity to her husband, Rex, who actually committed the murder.
During the initial killings, the family was away from the state, as reported, which seemingly left Rex with enough time to plan and execute the murders without the fear of being caught. Reportedly, when Rex was arrested in 2023, his family was shocked, embarrassed, and disgusted, and it was only after two weeks of the arrest that Asa filed for a divorce from Rex, which was finalised in 2025.

Rex Heuermann and Asa Ellerup have a daughter, Victoria, and the ex-couple also parented Ellerup's son, Christopher. Victoria used to work with her dad in her company, which had been shuttered, following his arrest.
As per reports, Victoria was finding it hard to get a job. On the other hand, following his dad's arrest, Christopher was not even able to walk down the lawn of their home, as people would take photos and question him. Ellerup spoke about her children's condition following Rex's arrest due to his then-alleged gruesome act. She shared with the New York Post that although her children are adults, to her, they are kids. She also mentioned that her children used to cry to sleep. To quote Ellerup:
"My children cry themselves to sleep. I mean, they’re not children. They’re grown adults but they’re my children, and my son has developmental disabilities and he cried himself to sleep. Christopher is so distraught and doesn’t understand, and as a mother, I have no answers for him. But I said, ‘We’re together.' That’s really what matters right now. That you and me are sitting here together and we will get through this.' "
Reportedly, as of November 2024, the family of three was living in their Massapequa Park home, which they shared with Heuermann, and planned to think further once the trial was given. Later, they decided to move to Southern California, to a home which was purchased earlier for retirement purposes. Ellerup lost her emotional connection to the home she shared with Rex, and reportedly planned to put the home up for sale once the divorce was finalised. Speaking about the same, Ellerup's attorney mentioned:
"People constantly stop in front of the house, to gawk and point and take pictures. She’s lost any emotional attachment she had to the premises because of everything that’s gone on, and the only way she can start recovering is to move.”

For over a decade, the Gilgo Beach killing remained one of the much-talked-about cases, which began back in May 2010 with a 911 call from a 24-year-old woman, Shannan Gilbert. A search investigation on her led the investigators to Ocean Parkways, where they were in search of Gilbert but found four dead bodies. By 2011, the number of dead increased to 11. For years, the case remained a cold one, but in 2022, a multi-agency task force was launched after an eyewitness's statement about a specific-looking car linked to one of the victims surfaced.
The car linkup led the investigators to Rex, but a low-key search was going on. The investigators finally got a slight confirmation when they discovered a pizza box from Rex's office, and the DNA matched the one found on one of the victims. Later, he was arrested, and a search mission at his home following this brought the revelation that he had 300 weapons and a blueprint document of crimes that he had committed in the basement. By April 9, 2026, he accepted that he was the one who committed the murder of 7 women and had initially murdered another woman.
